u cant make big subreddits private anymore because of this

Closed my community, mass edited all my posts, left and never went back. Fuck Spez, destroyer of reddit. I'm happy here.

The answer is in your post. They were forced to reopen. It wasn't just a threat; mods got replaced. A lot of people left, but they just accepted the loss of traffic and moved on.

At this point, anyone still there has just accepted that the site is dying and are riding it out until old stops working.

Many people already answered your question, so I’ll just tell my personal experience;

I initially left Reddit and went to Lemmy. Then figured it did not have the big community yet and still wanted to see some posts but not contribute to Reddit and so I used RSS feed for everything that’s on Reddit.

Then Apollo started to live through community and sideloading meanwhile Reddit started to fuck up RSS feeds. So decided to use the community Apollo app. So now using both Lemmy and Reddit.

People tried but honestly, the whole place is a cesspit in retrospect. Lot of mods get actual benefits from running their subreddits when they're big enough.

I was forced out when my two main accounts were Banned. (One is now back after being perma-banned 😂) Both times were for calling someones opinion "stupid". I didn't disparage someone, use foul language or get nasty with another user. All I said was "That's so stupid."

So I happily left since speech was being heavily censored. I only keep my one account active to find solutions to niche problems that are only found on reddit.

I was there, 10000 years ago. Now I’m asking you a question: “what the heck is Reddit?” Or “Why do you think it couldn’t get worse?”

I deleted all of my Reddit posts and comments and came here. Much better place to be, don’t regret the choice at all

Well I think you just answered your own question, that's exactly what happened to the 2023 Reddit API protest.

I moderated one of the large subs that took part in the protest. When the admins threatened us, that was the last straw for me to leave the platform.

Anybody at reddit now must like it or need it. Lemmy wasn't great either. I think most people have moved on from this kind of social media altogether. As a chronically online loser myself, I've never used the Internet less before in my life. It's scary, and sad, but it is what it is.

I dropped reddit cold turkey, then and there. Looking at my Lemmy account, joined June 22, 2023.

Every time I end up back on reddit for one reason or another, my skin absolutely crawls at what they've done to the site design. Been using alexandrite.app with Lemmy and quite happy with it.

Take this lesson to heart. Whether it's Reddit, or protests, or strike actions, you need strategic plans to account for moves and counter moves or your effort is just a minor inconvenience and you will never be heard and never promote your interests. People need a higher tolerance for sacrifice and a non-dependency relationship with corporations to allow for it. We should all be capable of dropping any business from our lives.

I dunno, I stopped using them entirely after that. Was the last straw in a long line of bad decisions but I also encountered more racism/misogyny leading up to the time I stopped using.
