It's Oligarchy Linux. Promoted by a bunch of millionaires and billionaires. That's why it's everywhere. That's it.
Another reason people are talking about it is that the creator is a notorious nazi.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

DHH is a Nazi pos, and I hate everyone glazing all over Omarchy.
I'm a little torn because if it helps raise awareness and desktop adoption if Linux, that's a win, but fuck DHH.
As with all things arch based: void better
According to this blog post, Omarchy has lot of security issues: https://blog.happyfellow.dev/merchants-of-insecurity/
Why is this being downvoted? This is just a naive and curious post; you guys really shouldn't fall into the Reddit habit of downvoting things that you simply don't like to read, instead of doing so when things are hateful, factually incorrect, or bad advice.
Gotta remember that a lot of Lemmy users are here because they've been banned from everywhere else. All the big Lemmy instances are highly moderation averse but I still report dipshits when I see them.
Honestly, shit like this is why I set up my own lemmy instance where down votes are disabled. It's built in configuration option, but very, very few instances have it set.
In practice it works pretty well. Popular stuff rises faster than unpopular stuff, but people don't get shit on for valid but unpopular opinions. It also means you can't down vote yourself, but the counter to that is to just up vote other things. So much less toxicity and more positivity - I can really recommend it.
Small instances are best. I just wish the big instances didn't have most of the communities.
Thank you for this! I didn't realise this existed! I will activate it on my instance 👍
Indeed -- downvotes has no purpose other than self-validation needs.
This blog took a look at it a while ago. Tl;dr, it's arch, plus hyperland, plus some packages, plus - the original part - some questionably managed dotfiles.
Also, anything DHH does should be immediately suspect. And him having some of his wealthy friends put some money in a foundation isn't really an indicator of quality, just networking.
Thanks for sharing this blog post, it was very interesting to read :)
Rich assholes want to capture more nerds to get them in their right-wing influence sphere. Cause there’s no other reason a bunch of fascist pricks would pay 8 million for glorified scripts.
Is it too late to copy a distro and drop some scripts in it for money, or would I have to be a racist dickbag for that to work?
Woke Mind Virus Linux.
SocksOS
you can probably be a pedo too.
Don’t forget that DHH is a rascist piece of shit.
One shouldn't talk about Omarchy and/or DHH and not bring up fascism (among other issues, but let's stay focused), self-professed: https://world.hey.com/dhh/three-sacred-cows-that-must-die-so-europe-can-live-1afb203d
At least one Arch maintainer says Arch won't be associated with them and calls Omarchy "just vibe-coded dotfiles and bash scripts": https://floss.social/@serebit/117162401397324439
I had to check if this was linuxshitpost or something.
Don't support or amplify fascists.
Omarchy is too close to oligarchy. Pass.
It is oligarchy.
Yes what's the deal. Because until yesterday I didn't heard about them.
I don't even know what it is. Is it a desktop Linux distribution? Is anyone using it at all?
Some rich dudes pushing money into it. That's all that I know.
I had a similar experience, though I read about it here a few days before Youtube started pushing videos about how Omarchy supposedly is the reason that everybody must switch to Linux now.
What I have gathered, without being more than moderately interested:
Here's an article on The Register. I haven't read through all of this just yet, but this might give you a pretty decent picture:
https://www.theregister.com/os-platforms/2026/08/27/omarchy-distro-gains-serious-backing/5293026
It refers to "the politics behind it" but doesn't specify what those are. Disappointing for The Reg. Those politics are racism. The people behind Omarchy and Hyprland are openly racist.
It's the main thing that sets it apart from other distros, so all those companies and billionaires putting their money behind it, probably see that as an attractive feature. So I guess I'll be avoiding them from now on.
They are: Shopify, Stripe, Dell, Block, Cloudflare, Sesame, 37signals, Dropbox and OpenClaw.
