Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Isn't it over now it's coming into September. I don't imagine there's going to be many heat wave through a while.
Firstly, it’s not over - in the UK it will cause big storms and potential flooding into the winter.
Secondly, the whole point is to encourage long-term disaster planning. Saying ‘we’re fine until next time’ and then panic buying on the cusp of the next event is exactly the thinking they’re hoping to address.
Here in Finland we have a strong recommendation from the government that everyone should have enough supplies to last 72 hours. There's guides available on what to have, how to do it and what to take into consideration. It's far easier for everyone if something big happens (storm, flood, war, problems with electricity/water grid...) to the rescue workers if the whole population isn't in an emergency after few hours. I think that's becoming more and more important globally as the climate changes and global environment gets more and more unstable.
I think I'm just unclear on what exactly it is that I'm supposed to be stocking up on, it's not like the supermarket sell MREs. I mean I have tinned soup and ravioli and stuff but that still needs power to heat up. So I'm really just left with crackers and biscuits and things and bottled water but even that has a shelf life.
With a lot of canned stuff you don’t need to heat it up (this includes soup). You just eat it right out of the can. Heating it up is a luxury, but it’s completely edible right from the can. If you’re worried, shake it slightly first then open and eat.
Fire, barbeque or gas stove works without electricity.
Army surplus and outdoor shops have food that lasts years and don't need refrigeration.
Bottled water is a scam. If you can drink your tapwater, use that and fill up a few big water jugs. Rotate every few months.
Most things have a shelf life but you should be rotating your stocks often enough to not let things spoil.
You should rotate the supply on your daily life. Get canned foods, eat them, replenish supply, rinse and repeat. That way the shelf life isn't really any concern. Also it's only for 3 days and for emergencies. If you have water and biscuits it's enough to survive long enough that rescuers and volunteers have time to set up pre-planned places where people can gather with generators, gas/wood stoves and such so you'll have more permanent shelter to stay in until the bigger problem is resolved.
Sure, it's not glorius and you might miss a french omelette for breakfast couple of times, but if you have even something it's way better than having nothing and being in immediate crisis if something happens.

The kit includes strict directions when kids should take them by government order. Useless for adults.
Its not useless for adults. Kids are just more susceptible, if the supply is limited then kids should go first. Adults still need a functional thyroid!

They’re talking about this but are we all likely to be affected? It sounds like it’s talking about roads getting blocked up but I live in a big town near two big cities, not exactly isolated. It doesn’t sound like it’s talking about supermarket shelves being empty.
That's easier said than done btw, like yeah stockpiling some long lasting cans of food is easy and even if you forget them they'll probably still be ok to eat but really what you want is to rotate that pantry so it has somewhat fresh stuff at all times. You also need water, which really is the Biggie here if the tap stops working. Of course also stuff for cooking/heating up if you have no gas or electricity into the house.
Yeah but at least I have an offline library of films and TV on my server
I sure hope that offline library works well without power.
