Anyway, yeah. I just fully expect shit like this from tv companies. They're not TVs, they're surveillance boxes with a screen. They will collect any and all data they can. I stopped updating my 2018 model in about 2020 or so when it bricked itself by auto-updating to a version that required my signature on a new set of T&Cs, and if I didn't accept the new T&C's I couldn't use the TV any more. No downgrading to the old version, just "accept this or don't use your tv any more". So that was when I cut off its internet connection and never looked back. If it ever breaks or needs to be replaced I don't know what I'll do really - look for some projector or computer monitor I suppose, since all tvs are like this now.

The thing is, it just isnt even a surprise anymore. In fact I'd be more surprised if these devices weren't doing this. What worries me is that the industry seems to think its acceptable and more often than not there are no consequences.

Before buying a TV we researched what you can use without giving it internet access. Turns out that is quite a few. We got a Samsung and indeed we never had to, and just use it as a dumb screen
