Is this some kind of americian thing I'm too free as a candian to worry about? You can still end up working it but it's overtime by default or paid time off if don't work it

No, I don't think so. Just the subset of those which have no value for society and only exist to respond to and perpetuate useless burecracy. Unnecessary middle managers, hr, etc..

It was recently labor day in other parts of the world. USA does not get to decide things for the global population wether it is holidays, trade deals, or the name of a body of water.

My fiance is a chef at an old folks home and gets holiday pay + normal pay.
