Everyone's forgetting the true OG: The humble Royole Flexpai

(It was a total piece of shit)

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 49 points 3 weeks ago (13 children)

Isn't this what Apple has been doing for decades now? Wait until tech stabilizes and doing it right? It tried to really innovate with the AR/VR headset and it flopped.

[–] Airfried@piefed.social 42 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah but they stopped being consistent with the "doing it right" part a long time ago.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

But wrapping everything in a proprietary fence (special connectors, blocked rms bridge, etc) is the very essence of the problem.

[–] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

people drove with those 🙄

Given that foldables are 2% of the market, I’m not sure the fact that there are a half dozen (or more) out there already is the flex you think it is.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Geez that’s basically the GDP of Australia.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is it any more crazy than spending the same for a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8?

https://fossbytes.com/apple-iphone-duo-vs-galaxy-z-fold-8-comparison/

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Both sides the same - crazy to spend that much on a phone, especially when the distinction is “more to go wrong”

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 24 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

True, and nobody wants any of them

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I see people using them with some regularity 🤷🏻‍♂️ not for me though.

[–] glarf@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Speak for yourself, two time owner, they're very nice.

It's the price tag, and the fact unfolded they are using a giant squarish format.

Bring me back to the old 16:9 formats, instead. That made sense. You could watch movies, shows, and videos full-screen.

And all of them start showing crease on the folding line after a few weeks or months.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Really? I thought it's visible from day 1.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

Some recent models are better at not showing it. But sooner or later it becomes noticeable.

If I had $1 for every time I've personally seen a folding phone in the wild, I'd still have $0.

[–] Doom@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

I used to have a folding phone.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I've seen a few but it were never the type of people i expected. It weren't nerds or techies or dudes with expensive cars, it was middle-aged women with presumably fake designer bags. Still haven't figuresd out if these are the only people buying foldable phones or I am just not in an area that is representative of their typical buyers. At first I thought they were hand me downs from their husbands, but then I'd have seen at some point a man that might be said husband with one.

No, they were designed with the suburban keeping up with the joneses types in mind

Who cares who got to market first?

[–] ChexMax@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't care a lick who was first, I'm a late adopter of all tech, but it is annoying when Apple users tout new features as if they're the first to experience them. It's the condescension that's annoying, especially when it's so misplaced

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

How often is that, really? Seems like more of a meme than anything else. I use their products, and prefer their UI. Is it perfect? Obviously not. But I do enjoy the vertical integration. Handoff just works™. iMessage works well, etc.

There are plenty of features that Android does better, and plenty that it does not. The haters are going to hate regardless.

This meme isn’t the burn that OP thinks it is.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-mover_advantage

But apple is quite good at showing up late and getting market share anyway.

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

Sure. It is known that Apple shows up late. Users keep buying their products, so they must be doing something right. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–] Airfried@piefed.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think more often than not it's more important to be early rather than being exactly the first. Unless you patent it in a way that makes it extremely hard to copy but software doesn't really work that way a lot of times. Being first barely seems to give you any advantage long term. You just want to be early enough before the network effect takes hold, for example.

[–] irish_link@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I really do find it funny that I never see memes or comments making fun of any other company relating to phones.

Don’t get me wrong. I have had android phones, windows phones, and even PalmOS phones. I know Apple is always behind the times, their comment about copy and paste needing to be perfect before release drove me up a wall. If I remember correctly, it was a jailbreak developer that made copy and paste available on the iPhone a few years before officially being released.

However, I never see people make fun of other companies after they announce a new release. Yall must really hate Apple.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Other companies didn't spend a couple decades positioning themselves as a kind of tech-fashion elite. Other companies didn't charge $200 for a crossbody "pocket". So it's funniest when Apple's stupid ideas blow up in their ridiculous image-obsessed faces.

Why bother when fans happily live a decade in the past?

Man I wish it was 2016.

[–] SourDragon@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

I would love to go back to July 15, 2016 because that's the day I got married 💖

My spouse and I are both still happily married, but to experience the joy of that day again

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 3 points 3 weeks ago
[–] Cheebus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

i bet if you channeled that energy you could experience it real time with your spouse :)

go for a walk together

Apple is a slow development company. Their strategy has never been moving fast on new trends. It’s too volatile. That being said it is kind of embarrassing when they show up so late to the game with this.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, but they still slap a new name onto an existing technology and pretend they invented that shit, hence the meme.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

It’s not even a new name. Microsoft makes. Folding phone like this and called it a duo. They panel wasn’t flexible though it just had 2 screens.

[–] danielfm123@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

OnePlus left western civilization :(
