I have a KIA, it is decent but I would love more freedom ans I sont trust that access will remain free. VW is paid now.

I am in europe and looking to buy in2027.

Do not base one of the most expensive purchases of your life around a single application.

My opinion - since you're running HA, I assume you like having control over your data. Any vehicle with a connection to the manufacturer is absolutely sucking up your data (everything you do in and to the car), and selling it to insurance providers.

Don't lean on the GDPR to protect you here. Your data is not safe in a connected car. Buy used.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm not, I have a number of options and this is a point of consideration.

All cars are required to have a sim since 2016, I wish they didnt have manufacturer access but they do. I thought maybe I would get someone pointing out how to get access locally

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I guess we got lucky with our 2015 Highlander 😅

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, tbh I want to decouple from tech providers completely and part of that would be enabling smart features to work locally in the car or back to a home server. I wish it were possible, currently you cant even get a FOSS alternative to apple or android auto

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, it sucks. I would love a FOSS alternative for AA.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The duopoly prevents it. In theory it should be simple to plug something other in and use it but the manufscturers dont allow for it.

Maps, music, calls and messages. None of this needs to be google and apple.

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 2 points 2 weeks ago

I agree. Do not pick a brand based on a cloud service that's subject to change.

My car is not connected to HA because I never created a login for it. I even went through the process to disable data transmission from the vehicle to Subaru.

A dumb one, as in not connected. You can get an OBD add-on for $100 US that will connect to home assistant.

Love the stock pot dude

I wish it were that easy but I need an EV which all have services live. Removing the sim causes performance issues

[–] TarantulaFudge@startrek.website 3 points 2 weeks ago

OBD is not a good solution for this. These devices can crash/fail and cause problems. It's just not reliable enough.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

OBD ports were not designed as IO ports. OBD plugins can cause parasitic draws, fires and fry the ECU.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Huge portions of the auto industry use them as such, including rental companies and insurance carriers.

I think I'll take the actions of the people who actually pay money based on those consequences rather than a rando on the internet.

I mean that's exactly why I don't use these devices. ODB port is not designed to be used for extended periods of time. I've had them fail on me before. It's a diagnostic port not a USB port. There are a lot of things connecting to the bus already.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately the likely answer is "there are none". All of these companies want to monetize these services and control your experience.

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'd say the Beat car brand going to piss your neighbors off, and likely be expensive as heck so I'd avoid it (like most "Beats" products).

/s - Just having fun with the obvious typo in your post title.

@Squizzy
Read last week that Skoda published an official API for smart control.

[–] EtzBetz@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

But Skoda is VWAG as well, I'd be wondering if they'd publish a free API while VW and Cupra are paying now.

A 20 year old something or other that doesn't interact with Home Assistant is your best bet for a free way to gain more freedom and trust. Bonus: you'll save tens of thousands on the initial purchase. You're basically being paid to have more freedom and trust

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except they have higher maintenance, tax and running costs in addition to lacking feature

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not sure how much that costs where you're from, but that might be offset by not having to pay for comprehensive insurance - again, if that's an option where you're from.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I domt think there are any insurance requirements where I am from

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

There's a pretty nicely made HACS module that allows me to scrape my Toyota Prius data and do whatever I want with it in HA. I can even remote start from it, and have an automation that auto starts my car on hot or cold days 15 minutes before the end of my shift.

Big caveats: the remote features are subscription. You get many years for free when you buy new, but mine is actually close to lapsing now and I don't think I'm going to pay for more. I doubt the plugin will continue to work as is one that happens.

[–] sanzky@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

the European toyota integration is quite ok.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Interesting, I do like someof tgeir SUVs and the lexus range

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

That looks great, shortcoming in terms of being able to interact - I would need to see a Kia specific integration.

Currently unlocking, setting charge times and all tat needs cloud and lag which is an issue on top of the privacy.

Ideally I want to be able to locally control but this is a great start. Thanks

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't know how well this translates to Europe, but I've been pretty happy with Ford. The remote stuff is free and there's a HACS extension with a lot of controls available.

[–] Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The remote stuff is free

For now....

[–] claude_flammang@dju.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

@Strit
You are most certainly right.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm really annoyed that the majority of HA integrations are run through HACS, which requires a GitHub account...

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Every HACS integration can be installed manually by downloading the repo and copying the folder into your instance. HACS is really just a convenience tool

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The entirety of Home Assistant is a convenience tool.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You have obviously never set up a HA instance :P

[–] claude_flammang@dju.social 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

@wreckedcarzz
You mean like flashing an SD-card with #homeassistant OS and put in a pi?

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I mean 'Home Assistant [...] is a convinence tool' and a book of other hilarious things to tell yourself :P

The C in Home Assistant is for convenient and simple, don't you know?

HA, taking time to integrate devices, configure those devices, automate those devices, keep updated, and your automations and device settings up to date, then set up within a reverse proxy (which itself requires several steps and care), then getting your family to use everything you have setup just so you can turn the lights when you walk into the room, is anything but 'convenient' lol.

It's a lovely geeky tool, but stepping back and looking at it, that statement is mental :P

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah, that's not how "whoosh" works...

Just because it requires effort to configure doesn't mean it's not a convenience software. The entire purpose is automation. What is automation if not convenience? Having a computer do something for you? Saying otherwise is nothing short of mental.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That is indeed how woosh works. The :P at the end of my comment hints at something. It's not my fault you missed it. The joke went over your head - woosh.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

It didn't go over my head, it was just a bad joke, if even a joke at all.

[–] uten151@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I have a KIA and the integration in HA is decent but it is through the KIA Connect server. Every so often, it asks to re-authenticate. This is the only integration in my HA that requires cloud account.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I have the same, I dislike the kia app it is so poorly laid out and difficult to find features. HA is better but kia have a lot of similar sensors that are difficult to interact with.

Really wish it could be local. I would go so far as to put my own sim in the car and point it to my own server only.

Yeah I was looking at the Buzz and California at the time! I would love the eCalifornia but I won't give them the money, they don't innovate enough and come across as entitled with their pricing and then charging for access to my cars features
