A very rich man hundreds or thousands of miles away accepts the risks to other peoples lives as a great deal.
How is someone supposed to get proper sleep working a sixteen hour day!?
Well, if they don't eat, shower, take a walk or rest, never clean their clothes, do any chores or have free time, they can still sleep for ~7h after they park the truck and make sure the load is still secured.
That's totally not slavery!

The point is moot. With diesel skyrocketing they won't be able to drive at all.
Trump is doing something Algore could only have wet dreams about.... Trump is ending the Diesel and internal combustion engine (poorly planned acronymy). He might not like it but as soon as he is out and all the refineries are in shambles something has to replace all that. Probably hydrogen, and battery powered vehicles.
Toyota tried hydrogen years ago and it didn't really catch on. If the global gas economy crashes, I know a lot of locations they could use as hydrogen fuel pumps.

Then the industry practice will be to force all the truckers with than benefit after 1 month, 3 weeks, 6 days so they don't have to pay it.

As a non-American, I find it baffling and hilarious that many Americans are proud to work 80 hours a week. It's not a flex. They'd regret having done so when they become too frail and forgetful at the old age. And all the money they saved and pension being collected will be spent on healthcare and medication instead.
They did not even live their life when they were young and they won't even enjoy the remainder.

apparently in academia, they think its a flex for PI to be working that much, granted the competitive to be hired at 4-year is pretty high.

Nah, it's been a marathon this is just that last sprint before the finish.
A couple years ago in the US, they switched from largely paper-based driver logging and random checks to an all-electronic tracking system, which was much more difficult to fake. Basically overnight, every rest stop and free truck parking area was jam-packed, and states have had to expand them since. It's important to note that nothing about the rest requirements actually changed, just how they were enforced. So, logically, before the electronic logging, a large number of truckers were just flagrantly ignoring the law, and it became evident after the fact.
I wonder if there's a name for that kind of phenomena.
I don't know about a name. I will just write it once more as this is yet another example of: "self-regulation is the same as no regulation".
You think we would have learned this from school. When there’s no teacher in the room to watch the testing, some kids alway cheat. The more they get away with it, the more kids decide to cheat. This seems super basic, but somehow they still convince people “self regulation” works.

Why do you think every other billboard on the interstate is for some lawyer suing truckers? Then trucker insurance goes up and they pass that expense on to shippers and everything gets more expensive. Businesses don’t care because everything’s is owned by the same private equities anyway - so the rich get richer.
Yup, my father drives semi's hauling cargo, and he's seen and told me of the number of horrific accidents that happen. We live in the same city and if he tells me of a recent accident he's seen, it almost never is reported through the news, but that could be biased since I don't search all of the news sites for it. But when a semi ploughs through a line of cars, killing several people on the freeway that were stopped from a previous accident ahead of them, I would expect to see it on most local stations...but it wasn't. Similar accident with long team haulers, driver fell asleep at wheel hit another semi from behind, destroyed the truck killing both, my father said as he drove by the accident he could see body parts strewn along the road. So, so many stories.
PS all this has me extreme vigilant and paranoid when driving around semi's on the freeway, especially those people who can't pass a semi and just hang out next to them matching their speed when I'm trying to get around them too
Like any recurring events it's boring reporting every deadly event in a city. Like suicides or school shooting. Next your going to want the wether to be news or sporting events to end every news show. Should they hire a different person to explain eather of these things.

Truckers arent going to be driving anywhere if the price of diesel doesnt slow.
Fun fact: it's definitely not going to slow. It's about to get even worse. Unless of course the government decides to subsidize the hell out of diesel to make it cheaper.

The problem will solve itself when diesel runs out in a few weeks, from what i hear the whole fuel production system is strained to the limit, so a even a small breakdown will give ripples through the system.

Even the original 14 is horrible. Here it's 9-10 hours per day max, with a cap of 56 hours per week.
I was about to say, they are alliwed 14 hour drives? Clownshit
