I think the apt answer is: "is he making decisions that actually make the US better?" He has made billions. He has hugely benefited his personal allies, allies that are not your allies. He did every shady thing he could do right in front of the entire population and still nothing has been done to really stop him. He gave a friend of his millions to clean a pool and they clearly were just stealing mob style and that was what we saw in plain view.
The dumbest president would be smarter than a big cow pie. Hmm, this is tough.
Lincoln and JFK were smarter presidents even post-gunshot. Trump out-dumbs half a plate of cold scrambled eggs.
The other 4% are literally the dumbest people ever.

Judging by by the proclamations of the maga crowd, he is precisely a dumb person's idea of a smart person.
Magats don't want a smart person. They want someone just as dumb or even dumber than they are.
The same goes for his felonies, his child rapes, his failed businesses, and his astounding corruption. They love him because of these things, not despite them. He's is the perfect representative the magat class.
This makes sense. The president is supposed to be held to a higher standard, on a level of Overton Window reasoning, which is what this demographic mostly operates on, this means that the president is viewed to be objectively at that level by default, regardless of who they are and what they do, the position/system wouldn’t allow otherwise, this allows subjective justification of anything above that line as not only acceptable but superior morality. “If the president can rape kids then I can use the n-word!” Levels of thinking. Him setting the bar at the floor allows some people to think that their bar is really high. Him being the president, with no other factors involved, enables a false sense of morality in a certain demographic of people. He validates them as honorable, and they take that personally.

Even with that advantage, people still have a worse opinion of the Democratic Party than of Trump and the Republican Party

It's still an unrelated survey, not the one the article is about. It's better than a twitpoll, but the 15k sample size got me excited in a way a 1500 sample size doesn't.
I want to talk about polls I think this is partially how they are rigging elections...
I got a texas based like survey and I was just, why not..
Literally when I would say i would support the other candidate other than the republican it would go into crazy talking points about Trans rights and stuff and give me an option to change my vote.
How is this not illegal?
I really enjoy those surveys because there's usually a fill in part at some point and I use then to express the most blasphemous opinions possible. When one survey was trying to gauge at what point abortion should be legal, I wrote in that if it's still attached to me by umbilical cord I get to crush its skull between my thighs as a conservative limit.
As someone from outside the US ... the abortion stuff is wild to me. It's between the mother and doctor to me ... I don't see a point in people who aren't knowledgeable about this process to chime in.

I mean, William Henry Harrison's stupidity arguably killed him the day he took the office (although he only died a few weeks later). So the bar is pretty high there.
But Trump is stupid in the worst way possible.. The way that hurts other people.

The senate failed to convict him.
Impeach means to accuse, it's analagous to indictment in criminal law.

Trump is old enough to default to what works for him. To some this comes off as "smart", but to most it comes off as dumb.
In all honesty, I think it's mostly autopilot at this point. I'm old enough to recognize an autopilot when I see one (Hey, we've all been doing it from time to time). But his autopilot is driving him and everyone with him straight i to the ground.
