Oh God this whole article and website is just a pile of slop. This turd got shat out by some prompt artist calling themselves "Future AI Dude".

The Internet used to have places, but now we have little hellholes like this. I feel attacked personally seeing an AI slop site pretend to have nostalgia for an simpler time.

I know telling people to kys is bad form, but am I allowed to say it to a bot? I am not even sure how a AI would go about killing itself, but the one that wrote this should give it a go.

AI and gui gave lot of idiots lot of power and accessibility over spaces that used to be reserved for those who actually knew how to reac them. Now any sub 50 IQ button smasher can shat out a hit piece paying 2 cents and hour to illiterate expat or churn out slop from an ai

Every little mmo guild had their own community forums.
Now everything is freaking discord... I like discord to a point.
For guild stuff I would still prefer forums the good old phpBB - I made so many different skins for it, then the e107 sites...
I haven't thought about elthem for almot 20 yrs... Still have some backups somewhere.

There's a pretty great discord server for my profession. I would love it so much more on a message board. Searching something then wading through other people talking in the middle of trying to read troubleshooting information sucks!

Sounds like an actual good use for AI summaries, if the AI can get the stuff you need separated from the irrelevant conversation.

Assuming random messages on Discord are accurate is pretty bold to begin with.

LLM agents do get things wrong, but if it's something you can verify it is a lot faster to let the LLM try, check it out, and if it failed let it try again, vs slogging through hundreds of pages of "maybe there's something in here I need" reading them yourself.

The other advantage the agent has is that it can literally skim months or years of history and correlate what are the most common answers, found in contexts most relevant to your situation, where you're more likely to have search fatigue by the time you find the first statement that might apply...

Not really. Google can only be as good if it actually has good stuff it can surface you. You can't find something that does not exist.

I've had a website at a .com address since 1997. Google used to surface it front page on relevant searches for over a decade. Not so much anymore - now if you don't know its unique name, you're not likely to find it. However, for the people who do reference it on a regular basis, Google does show it for them...

I mean, IRC is not dead, there are still active chatrooms and there's even an implementation that allows sharing media over the room.

I think IRC will always have its place, because it's simple and easy to set up. Great for communities when someone wants to chat about what the community is about or needs quick help.

I for myself miss forums, especially since it acts as an archive as well as for various other things. It's atrocious how Discord managed to take its place and made things so much worse.

The way I see it is, for many things on the internet, the raw number of people using them has stayed steady or even gone up slightly, but there are so many more people who wouldn't have used the old internet online now, and much of the money and energy goes to catering to them, which means Facebook, Instagram, Reddit etc. The people who know what they're doing still use the old internet. We should be extending our arms to the people stuck on social media, who think that is the whole thing.

So many people struggle just to understand / use Facebook, that's where they stop - if it isn't on Facebook, or their other platform of choice, it's dead to them because they just won't take the time.
