I don't have a top X of anything. It depends on
- My mood
- What's been released
- How naughty the industry has been
- However I've never played on console
- Also I've been around for longer than most of you, and my first game really was Pong

Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.
1. Submissions have to be related to games
Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.
This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.
2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil
No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.
We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.
3. No excessive self-promotion
Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.
This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.
4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts
This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.
We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.
5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW
Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.
No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.
6. No linking to piracy
Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.
We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

I don't have a top X of anything. It depends on
Username checks out. (You could have just tossed out some names instead of getting stuck on the semantics of "top", you know. That's what most of us did.)
Need for Speed: No Limits Subway Surfers Mine Shooter 2: Noob vs Mobs Lumosity Temple Run
(By the way, I'm not even much of a gamer)
Rocket League Battlefield 3 Destiny Portal 2 Mario Kart 8
Honorable mention: iRacing in VR
Sekiro
Baldur's Gate 3
Witcher 3 Wild hunt
Civ 5
Hollow Knight
(It’s impossible to limit to 5, so here’s 5 more)
In terms of hours played
Elden ring
Pokemon emerald
Skyrim
Witcher 3
Mortal Kombat X
In terms of replay value
Tekken 8/Mortal Kombat X (fighting games have basically infinite replay value if there are people online or in person you can play with)
Dark Souls 2 (best Souls game with the best NG+ system)
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (best MH game, GU is a close second for me)
World of Warcraft (an addiction rather than a game)
In terms of "best game"
Elden Ring/DS2
Baldur's Gate 3
Witcher 3 (after QOL updates)
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Mother 3
Honorable mentions: Chrono Trigger, Civilization V, Age of Empires IV, Fallout New Vegas, Final Fantasy VI (GBA), the other 2 Witcher games, Zelda from OOC to Twilight Princess (truly a golden age for Nintendo), Dark Souls 1, Super Metroid, Borderlands 2 (did not age well, but I have good memories of the multiplayer experience)___
Silent Hill 2
Morrowind
Red Dead Redemption 2

Couldn't do 5
Not listing the specific game release, more the game epoch:
Half Life, Doom, Quake, Warcraft, Age Of Empires.
Rimworld
Stellaris
FTL: Faster Than Light
Crusader Kings 3
XCOM: Enemy Within
Honorable mentions:
No Man's Sky, Baldur's Gate 3, Dwarf Fortress, Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas.
Would be two lists for me. One for "best", as in they were great, gave me joy or strong emotional responses, but their replay value is not great:
"Best" as in can't get enough of it and would take to a remote island:
Wing Commander
Baldur's Gate 2
Mass Effect 3 with Citadel DLC
Knights of the Old Republic
X-COM
No particular order:
this type of question is too hard.. i wish people would at least limit these questions to a specific platform.
Ugh.. in no particular order
I guess, maybe. trying to compress 40+ years of games down to a top five is to goddamn hard.
A fellow FFVIII enjoyer! We never get any love.
The story is genuinely something special.
and, while I love the magic/junction system, I can understand the other opinions about it.
the only complaint I have about it is the enemy infinitely scaling with your level, which really fucked me cause I'm a grinder that likes to be overpowered, which i never got to be in FF8 lol
With honorable mentions to Elder Scroll Oblivion and Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon.
I like games where I can spend dozens of hours forgetting about the main quest and losing myself exploring the world, and then coming back to the main quest when I'm ready. If I can put 100 hours into a game just in exploration I am down, but at the same time I hate being forced to grind repetitive combat like in Dark Souls games.
Edit: extra honorable mentions to Red Dead Redemption 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. I can't believe I forgot about those games, they're definitely not in my top 5 but in my top 10-15 for sure. I put many very happy hours into those games. Add in Stardew Valley and Terraria and you almost have my top 15.
Half Life 2 (+ deathmatch, episodes, and Alyx all viewed as one piece), Sonic and knuckles (plus 2 & 3), Mario 3, dead by daylight.
No particular order but mine would be (I went with a top 10 list since I just couldn't narrow it down further):
Nice to see another Stationeer
I can think of way more than five. These are the first ones that popped into my head when I saw the question.
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Homeworld 2
Half-life 2
God of War: Ragnarok
Alan Wake 2
Baba is You
Dragon Warrior Monsters (the first one)
Monster Hunter World (w/ Iceborne)
Operation: Inner Space (a 1994 Windows 3.1 game about rescuing the icons on your computer with a little spaceship)
Disciples II (Turn-Based Strategy game from the early 2000s)
EDIT: Formatting
In no particular order: Baldur's Gate 3, Half-Life, Minecraft, Warframe, Eve Online
o7
How do you do fello space nerd.
WARFRAME BABBYYYYY
Honourable mentions: Super Mario Bros 3, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Shovel Knight, Nier Automata, Persona 4
You're all wrong, only correct answer is:
With Smash Melee and Hades II only just missing out.
OoT is a top 5 overrated game for sure. It's a good game and I have to respect its impact on the medium but it's status atop so many "best games of all time" lists is pure nostalgia.
Honorable Mentions: Diablo 2, Destiny, Skyrim, Gran Turismo 4, Red Dead 2, Tetris, & Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - pick one
Rimworld
Dwarf Fortress
Space Station 13
The Witcher 3
