Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

The real, most trolling cruelty here is that if you say "Star Wars" you can't have "It's a trap!"

And Star Trek fans will have to endure a Star Wars meme staining their choice.

I feel like in 2074 we're still going to be circulating this exact image

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

With more artefacting of course.

nah it'll be AI upscaled and the grid won't even line up

[–] peetabix@sh.itjust.works 12 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I'd always classed Star Wars as science fantasy.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 8 points 6 days ago

Space opera.

Hate to break it to you...but so is Star Trek. Instead of the Force, it's psionics (Vulcans), telepathy (Betazeds), and "things that science can't explain yet" (Q, all of the god-tier aliens that Kirk had to deal with). A lot of times, there is no explanation for why an alien can do magic other than they're an alien.

I make the argument that Star Wars is not science fiction, rather a fantasy that takes place in space. Science and technology do not drive the stories, nor are they the solutions to the problems that arise. They are incidental and could just as well be replaced with actual magic. They tried to go the other way by explaining the force with midiclorians... Which was accepted by basically no one.

If this is old enough, that distinction didn't exist... at least not in popular discourse. Lasers and shit was SciFi, even if it had magic or whatever.

This is why libraries put the sci fi and fantasy sections together, so they can avoid being drawn into these kinds of debates.

How do crossword writers make those perfect square crosswords with every letter in two words, after you fill in enough words how do you not get to a point where there are no words that fit

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

I imagine they just play 1-person scrabble with infinite pieces. Then they put the descriptions afterwards.

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

That's kind of trolling both fanbases at the same time.

[–] Hawanja@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Obviously Stark Trek is the real answer.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 6 days ago (12 children)

I see "wrap, waist, payers, leased"

[–] MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago
