Perhaps NASA is doing it to make a trophy that might impress the imbecile emperor in hopes of securing funding for space science.

Like in Rainbow Mars when the Time Travel Bureau has to go on safari to capture extinct pets for their imbecile emperor.

The SR-71 is the fastest production plane ever made that we know of. If one is being brought out of retirement, my first inclination would be to think it's because something bad happened and they ran out of "Auroras" or whatever even faster black project jet they replaced it with.
