Well... I never got any notification ๐ค did you have to set up something specific?
The only weird setting I had the set was the background refresh interval. Mind defaulted off, which seems dumb.
If you don't set that, it won't pick up new tasks that you added via the Web UI , and so you might not get notifications for those.
Once I set that I've been getting notifications pretty consistently. Also check that you've allowed notifications for that app. And the task needs to have a due date set for the notification. Not sure if it also needs a reminder. I think I just do due date.
If you'd rather keep Vikunja as the backend and web UI, it has a CalDAV endpoint, so you can point DAVx5 at it and use Tasks.org or jtx Board on Android for the reminders themselves. That gets you native Android notifications without email, and you keep the web interface for planning. Vikunja's CalDAV side is less mature than its web UI, though, so test whether due dates and reminders come across the way you expect before moving everything over.
For notifications that aren't tied to a task app (say, "remind me when X happens" from a script or Home Assistant), ntfy is the simplest self-hosted push to Android, as mentioned above.
Baikal backend, DAVx5 android app and tasks.org android app.
Thats what you want. All open source.
Been using for notifications for a while and its great.
If super productivity + nextcloud ends up not being a good fit, i'll give this a try, thanks :)
I'm using a similar stack, Radicale on backend, DAVx5, and Calengoo as app.
Calengoo is not open source but you can buy it directly from the developer without Google integration. It's the only calendar app I've found that also does tasks properly, in that if I dismiss a task without explicitly marking it completed the notification will come back. It looks a bit strange out of the box but it has multiple themes and it's super configurable.
The one thing I don't like is that it uses a direct connection to CalDAV to mark tasks completed, instead of going through DAVx5 (not sure if it's a limitation in the Android chain or what).
yeah i do exactly this and it's very stable and unproblematic. has made a significant difference in my life
Yeah I guess I should of noted that this was like one of the first things I selfhosted 2 years ago and its like one of the very few things that never breaks or annoys me. It just works very reliably.
Plus you also self host your calendar and contacts list with this.
Maybe Super Productivity. https://super-productivity.com/
Oh nice, it has a sync system with nextcloud !
I use this for absolutely every managemnt of tasks. Can 100% recommend.
Do you self host the sync server? Im using their infra atm but wondering if it's worth switcing.
I use the nextcloud of a friend. No problems there.
habitica self hosted?
You can self host habitica?? :O
I remember there was an open PR to support the self-hosted backend on their application. I've followed it for years until I gave HabitTrove a change https://habittrove.app.enting.org/
yes and It works well for my adhd ass!
im level 70 mage with some pet pandas

Also, if you wanted something more customized and jerry rigged, push notifications is very easy with ntfy. Its just a webhook so you could theoretically make anything a notification.
Hadn't heart about ntfy, looks great for future projects, thanks !
So many recommendations, wow!
Looks like I got work to do this week end, thanks a lot!

If only you had an app to list all the things you need to do ๐ค
I don't use the notification functionality so take this recommendation worth a grain of salt, but I've been liking Donetick.
Not sure about notifications but have a look at jbx board
Jtx does notifications pretty competently. I've been using it with WebDAV sync for half a year roughly.
Set up is a little involved though, lots of settings and you need an extra app to actually handle the sync.
Jtx notifications are always on time and sticky if you want.
