Why aren't they automatically looking for business links between Slovenian domain vendors and the First Family? Melania is Slovenian after all and it would be such a misstep if not even her extended family got to profit from this one.

Now there's a thought. Lemmy got any real journalists ready for a story?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

OK but I don't think they're smart enough for this. They make more money via insider trading

lol there isn’t “unprecedented demand,” it’s a $15/year charge for these big companies and they buy every domain they can think of, what’s one more?

What’s the best TLD for rapists and nazis?

.gov

When the name is worth more than the product, you know the whole industry is bullshit.

Why is SLOVENIA using the SI domain? "Slovenian Internet," perhaps?

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 34 points 3 weeks ago

Sierra Leone became a country before Slovenia. First come first serve.

ISO standardized abbreviations are mandatory for country-domains.

Even Trump cannot change ".us" into ".tr" :-) (but please don't tell him anyway)

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No, but he could definitely pull some strings to get IANA to add .trump as a new gTLD (honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't already happened - I had to check) and the government has no obligation to continue using .us or .gov as far as I know.

[–] Tanoh@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Doesn't need to pull any strings. You can buy almost any new gTLD you want, for the rich the price is chump change.

[–] Maestro@fedia.io 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yes, but Trump only pretends to be rich

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think that's true any more. It might have been a few years ago, but he's legalized bribery with his shitcoins etc since then.

[–] Tanoh@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

With all the corruption and kickbacks, he is rich now.

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

That just gives him a reason to invade Turkey.

To confuse people with fonts where I and l look similar.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How is it spelled in the local language?

So Slovinia then. Two letter country codes would have a lot of conflicts no matter how you slice it.
