The deadlock broke open in March 2025 when Hutton spoke to the Saturday Paper and later to the Guardian in July. In the interim, Hutton began increasingly sharing articles and opinions on Facebook that criticised what he called “trans extremists”.

Hutton said he believed his expulsion signaled “a crisis point” for the Greens, who have seen their political gains erode in Queensland in recent state and federal elections.

“People are starting to see the Greens as weird and unlikable,’ Hutton said.

Hutton refused to comply, citing free speech – an issue for which he had once chained himself to a tree in Queens Street Mall and for which he had been thrown into jail by Bjelke-Petersen’s corrupt police force many times as part of a broader civil disobedience campaign which was, eventually, successful in the form of the landmark 1992 Peaceful Assembly Act.

Hutton says his is not an isolated case, and claims he knows of more than 40 people who have been expelled or “forced out” of the Greens after voicing their position on gender.

“Almost all of them are women,” Hutton says. “They’re second-wave feminists, for the most part. Some of them are lesbians. And they are outraged.

Free speech is an American concept, in Australia inciting hate against minorities is not considered a thing that should be allowed and rightly so. That said we (like America) need to do more on defamation laws so it's not the rich people enforcing speech restrictions.

That said, specifically Drew Hutton wasn't even accused of transphobia. The issue was that him criticizing the Greens for their decision to expel a transphobic member "provided a platform for others to demean trans women" which is ... I think we can all agree unreasonable. That was only a suspension though. The specific "criticism of trans extremism" that later got him booted from the party entirely isn't entirely specified.

I just don't think this is true. Drew is being snarky after going in to bat for TERFs and losing. That's all.
