Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I usually see the opposite (on reddit of course):

"I want to run Kali on my phone, plz help".

"I am a Linux noob and went with Arch because I heard all the cool kids use it, now something bork".

"Which distro???" (same question was last asked 4 hours ago)

For a normie like me, i stick with Bazzite.

    [–] utnapishtim@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 hours ago

    Bazzite is the best

Yeah I just booted my main PC first with Gnome Bazzite (oopsies) and then again with KDE version.. Works well, no notes. All my games, musics, discs, whatever, works. LMDE is great on my old-ass laptop tho.

I don't really want to be the tiger but what do you do on immutable distros when you want to e.g. compile a C program from source (say, an SDL game). I always thought being able to easily install popular libraries from package manager a huge advantage of Linux over windows and mac.

Bazzite really does "just work", it's so awesome.

Entirely inaccurate, there wasn't near enough baseless insults and wild assumptions.

at least with llm one can always get some help. not necessarily good help and maybe even be misdirected by ones own misconceptions that the llm could reinforce. But with little things like what some obscure thing that is obvious to experienced users is, or how to do something not too complicated.

But i wouldnt rely on it to troubleshoot arcane problems, did that myself and later it turned out the problem was somewhere completely different i thought and it "suggested". I think it proposed at some point the problem could be where it actually was but i was convinced it couldnt be that and i thought i had ruled it out myself earlier. Then i noticed much later that i missed something when i tested things to rule out that particular source of problem. I guess one could still use it to get information on how to gather information yourself, that might be relevant to someone who actually knows something. And it could do some analyzing on logs and other system information files to find patterns human couldnt find without a lot of expertise.

The forums were chock full of people sporting muscular, masculine-looking anthropomorphic animal avatars.

This is partly down to human nature. Some people make it easy for newbies and listen to them. And others get off on talking down to people. For them, a newbie is a great target. Worse if that newbie is not there to learn to be an IT pro. Just wants to use Linux as a user.

For example, just ask for a GUI solution to a problem, and you will see some CLI pros rush to answer. Even though they have no clue about the relevant GUI nor about usability. Thank them and say you really are looking for the GUI solution, and you will sometimes get a diatribe about that Linux is all about the power of the CLI, and it goes on to get quite tedious and gatekeepery. For some, the rejection is a trigger.

If you are an IT pro, you might not encounter this if you don't specifically ask for the GUI way. And maybe come to believe the community is all wonderful.

I'm someone who just prefers a GUI. I can do CLI for small things, but when it comes to ease of use, GUI all the way.

The Arch and NixOS users feel attacked.
