Never seen anybody using emoji in any community. I did use once or twice, but the way its absent over here, I'm starting to think its part of some implicit rules lemmy has

Emoji are less convenient to type and come instead of older Internet conventions that many folks here use and remember pretty well. You know, limitations fueled creativity :-)

Lemmy seems to skew older and they don't like emojis because it's stupid/unprofessional/w/e

Probably all the lead poison

Probably all the lead poison

jfc skew older doesn't mean a preponderance of boomers. you do realize they cut lead out of fuel in the 70s right?

πŸ‘‰ Sprinkling them in πŸ‘‰πŸ‘ˆ text to mark βœ… normals words in weird πŸ•ΆοΈ ways adding absolutely nothing ❗❗ to the context? Absolutely not ❌❌

Using them to just give an emotion through a face? Eh, also not πŸ˜’

I think my first thought is that MAGA’s rage bot farms will use a lot of laughing emojis to taunt people.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

I have never been super big on them but use them. I do think they are overused in general but no necessarily here.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You see them sometimes, but they're only really ever used when they're needed for something that can't as easily be expressed with text. I've seen many other places where they're overused, and it just makes things harder to read. I don't care for that. It's not a rule to not use them, but it is an implied rule to not overuse them (except in mockery).

Lemmy has a much older user base though. Most of us grew up with emoticons (the text version of emojis) at most. Emojis are used a lot more with people who grew up with smart phones.

[–] Dearth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Emojis seem like another language to me now. The last time i used emojis for regular communication it was on AIM

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

This is how I feel about emojis in conversation:

β›”

πŸ™‚πŸ‘ŽπŸ’¬πŸ‘

Translation"No. Emoji bad text good"

Instead, I like emoticons in chat because they're fun. ◝(^⌣^)β—œ

I use them about as often and i the same context as intentional facial expressions. πŸ˜…

Because they’re for children.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're thinking of anime. Or maybe something else that is also anigay.

I guess we will never know.

[–] datavoid@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Big emoji out here downvoting the haters

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Emojis are for people who don't know how to read/write the local language. No exceptions. That includes 'native speakers' of the language who use them. Emoji are a sign of illiteracy and people who use them were failed by their education.

Okay thats farπŸ˜‘
