Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If they could draw or make music, they wouldn't need a robot to do it, and they clearly want to but don't have the skills.

You can get better at it, and if you want some good tutorial books I have recommendations!

Sadly. They’re all going to disappear. The new generations don’t want to work for things. And learning takes effort. They can be validated through creating artificial music.

It’s tough to prevent that type of culture when art organizations aren’t even disallowing the use of AI anymore.

Doubt.

You spend so much time using your clock and calculator on your phone you clearly want to be an engineer but don't have the skills.

That's actually a really illuminating analogy.

I can't say I understand what people get out of playing with LLMs, but if they view writing code or drawing pictures like I view using a calculator then that explains a lot of the disconnect between the two camps.

I would 100% let some model draw me up a comic to shitpost without a second thought, and it by no means should be construed to mean that I wish I had chosen art for a career or a major or even a hobby.

This is basically just taking a shit on the sidewalk and leaving it there.

Ok? So is Mimi comics and pizzacake if you ask me.

Creating a piece of art myself is different than enjoying someone else's creation. There's a place for both. Lots of respect for, say, professional musicians. They have natural skills and years of hard work that I don't and no amount of hobbying will get me close to them. But I still find satisfaction in twiddling around on a piano and writing my own tunes. AI helping people enjoy their hobby more is a good application, IMO.

Contrast that with people using it to "side-hustle" and try to scrape up some easy dollars by flooding the world with passionless slop, that's a different thing.

Ya, I enjoy playing guitar and making little finger picking riffs. I also enjoyed using music gen to mix different styles together and writing lyrics for them (eventually, it gets a bit old though).

I never even considered uploading those songs and sharing them, nor starting to churn out slop to make 5 bucks on Spotify. It's legit asshole behavior imo. Spotify itself makes it hard enough to make money when you are a proper musician, I'm guessing it's even harder now.

Ai isn't their hobby

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This... this is the reasonable course that's shunned by our divisive culture nowadays. I personally don't have the time or the space, but I do have a computer, so I use what tools I have. Local models ftw

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'll take my downvotes now 😞

Jk, I'm on an instance that disables downvotes. Meaning folks have to write coherent comments for me to be aware they think I'm dumb/wrong/eeeeevil.

I could see tinkering with local models being a very satisfying hobby. I've always been curious about how accurate they can get on sentiment. E.g., a southern US woman saying "bless your heart" can have implied condescension while other regions it may be more of a straightforward good-faith comment; how and how well does a model get trained on that sort of thing.

I agree. I think AI fills a creativity gap for average users - worth making quickly once, not worth pursuing an artist to make it.

I don't think AI will replace appreciation for human art, as human art is as much about soul as it is skill. AI can only ever do half the equation, but it's the half that the average person doesn't have and isn't quite willing to pursue.

I'm sure there's an argument to be made that AI copying human art is watering down the value of art, but with how people recoil after finding out it's AI, I think the bigger risk is never having it disclosed in the first place.
