A new division called Xbox XP will take the lead on "film and television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live experiences," with a focus "on how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves."

Sigh....

Thought the thumbnail was Mia Khalifa for a second. “how people experience our franchises beyond the games themselves” indeed.

Then they will not release movies to get tax breaks. Bunch of geniuses.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Next for release: Master Chief vs Acme Corporation

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 10 hours ago

Microsoft getting into the movie biz when many are no longer watching movies. Genius! Those who watch the Microsoft movies...will they need to purchase new hardware? /s

Wow, so, Nintendo is winning the console war by suicide? Sony jumped off the console cliff out of nowhere, and now Xbox is eating a rat poison cake for fun.

Still standing : the indie scene, the PC gaming master race, the retrogaming scene, Nintendon't.

I hope Valve won't die by autoerotic asphyxia. I don't like them THAT MUCH (like, Newel is building cunt yachts instead of funding cool studios for cool new games), but they're still on the good side of history.

We'll still have GOG, though.

I just picked up a refurbished workstation for $200 to stream my main pc to the living room via Steam. Works like a charm 😎

It’s running Cachy OS and can play some light-weight titles by itself too.

[–] afaix@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

GOG tried to kill itself with the Nazi symbols sent in emails, that they never really apologized for. They are lucky people have short memories.

As someone who has been around since the third console generation (NES, SMS), honestly I feel like we are living in one of the worst eras in gaming history, second only to the crash of '83 (but I wasn't there for that so I can't confirm).

It really sucks that Nintendo is winning the console wars. Between suing their fans for making their games better, and them being seemingly unable to release a console that can keep up with modern performance standards (The Switch 2 only has 1500 shader cores FFS; modern midrange GPUs have 10,000+!), I wish literally anyone else was on top.

I mean I'm not in this fight—my last console was the 360—and I've been PC exclusive since, but still, we need healthy competition or things are only going to get worse for gamers.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The Switch 2 is a handheld. I don't get why people expect it to be on par with home platforms, it's competition is the Steam Deck.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Yes that's the problem! Nintendo only has a handheld option available at the moment; where's their home console?

Also, why did they downgrade their handhelds by replacing the 3D display with a boring 2D panel? That was the 3DS' best feature! No one else does glasses-free 3D; why get rid of your best gimmick? (God I miss 3D gaming so much, especially on PC. VR is nice but headsets are more cumbersome than glasses.)

[–] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 12 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

PC gaming might be standing but it's costing an arm and a leg to do so.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 14 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

At least with PC gaming it's possible to buy an old computer or laptop and have a massive library. It's not like we're restricted to the current generation, I could go and play Wasteland on my modern PC with no issue if I wanted to install a couple megabytes.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Also if you've got old hardware you can still play the new games, just at much lower settings.

If you've got a PS4 you can't just play PS5 games at lower settings.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago

Well when I was saying older my brain was thinking decades older like 06, because I'm a Redneck with access to Linux and will see how well it works. Usually it's surprisingly functional even if I do have to get some weird ass RAM to do mild upgrades, you'd be surprised how many things used to run on 1GB.

[–] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 3 points 17 hours ago

Adding on this, all those old multiplayer games you think nobody plays anymore? Yeah, there's a Discord somewhere just for people to organize play times for that game. For example, the whole arena FPS subgenre still lives on that way, all the way back to Doom and Quake. You can play that old game you love again. Maybe not the instant you try, but you can. You haven't played for the last time if you're willing to go look and ask around.

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 4 points 18 hours ago

You're right, these past few years have been awful to acquire a PC

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 18 hours ago

There’s no sense in selling a loss-leader computer/console when the losses are soooooo massive these days because of component shortages caused by billionaire hoarders.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 20 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I saw a post on blusky that summarized it: Microsoft never wanted to consolidate studios. They wanted to consolidate IP.

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That was always the case. Nobody cares about workers from other companies. There is a reason why people fear for their jobs in buyouts/mergers.

Xbox now has some of the best IP in gaming.

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I think they've really underestimated just how little consumers care about IP when the product attached to it is trash.

20 years ago, Halo was one of the most beloved gaming IPs. Now, after a decade of garbage, hardly anyone gives a shit about it.

[–] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 120 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I could understand doing this if your brand was thriving, but this just feels like trying to squeeze money out of a sinking business instead of fixing the problems that are sinking it.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 18 hours ago

You have to remember that literally none of the executives making these decisions play video games. Or any games. They literally can’t fundamentally understand that playing a game that you don’t win is still fun, because they are toxic narcissists.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 70 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Their C-suites are in panic and know fuck all about games but they probably have seen one or two movies and have heard of Netflix. They probably proposed this because it‘s the only thing that makes sense to them in a foreign world that confuses them. It can only fail and will likely churn out AI slop nobody wants to watch.

[–] end_stage_ligma@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Damn. Wait until they hear about Stremio.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 28 points 1 day ago

People making the decisions are removed from how work gets done, how users engage with the product, and any real consequences. But they keep most the profits despite contributing minimally.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They may also think Disney or Skydance will buy them and theyll get to sail out the window on their golden parachutes.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 5 points 18 hours ago

This could provide some benefit if that wasn't a metaphor.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure they're in liquidation mode right now. Everything at Microsoft is being sacrificed on the altar of AI

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

It makes sense when you realize they paid bank for a bunch of IPs over the last 5 years and want to squeeze more out of it.

This is just them looking to make codblops the movie.

[–] holy_scroller@lemmy.zip 14 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Don't video game sales make magnitudes more money than movies. Sounds like a another brilliant Xbox move.

[–] bigmamoth@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Depend. Pokemon doesn't make his principal income by selling video game. Mario was a big success.

[–] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

If they wanted money, they should just make a decent MMO and/or predatory gacha games

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 64 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Oh, yeah, this will work. Why didn't anyone else think of this?

/s

[–] Ashiette@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They should make Uwe Boll head of that department.

Moar Master Chief ASS! That's what gamers really want!

[–] deadcream@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

Someone at Microsoft is really mad that it was Amazon who profited from Fallout tv show.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I can't wait for XBox Live: The Movie!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 6 points 21 hours ago

Xbox now owns the following franchises, among many others: Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, The Outer Worlds, Wolfenstein, Doom... Those are just most of the important ones from recent acquisitions. Some already have movies or TV shows, but they can always make new ones for those too.

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

Now that everyone hates the IP, let’s ruin them further with movies

They are absolutely fucked

yeah this is bullshit move. copying PlayStation, which didn't even do great with films.

but i guess part of the reason is that since hardware prices keeping going up and up, they don't expect many ppl to buy future consoles or handhelds.

and movies/tv don't require audience to buy any hardware upgrades, for the most part.

[–] eddanja@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Shame they can't repeat the success of the 360.

[–] HughMann@piefed.social 4 points 22 hours ago

Every 360 I acquired has succumbed to the RROD. Still wish I had one that worked though, it was insanely popular. I barely used my XBone

[–] radix@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The bargain bins are full of once-great brands that haven't produced anything in decades, but will let any old cheap factory slap their name on a product for a few bucks.

This is basically the same thing, but with stories instead of hardware.

[–] Toasticus@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

"Xbox XP will be headed by Kayleen Walters, who previously spent a couple years as president of Minecraft studio Mojang and before that spent close to a decade in different brand and "franchise development" roles at Microsoft. Prior to that she spent 13 years at Lucasfilm, finishing her time there as vice president of franchise marketing and integrated planning."

That's disaster waiting to happen, all in that one paragraph. So you're going to have someone spearheading this, who only knows Minecraft and Marketing. Yeah, good fucking job there, idiots. There is nothing there that speaks of being a director, a producer or even having a hand working staff behind a film. Just an annoying marketer who's going to shove this shit down our throats. Wonderful.

Surely something from Microsoft with XP in the name will leave a lasting positive legacy...
