I love her to bits but I can't figure out how she though this was a gold idea. It puts fumes into the food

Yeah, that's a terrible idea. Just get an actual vacuum bag sealer.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 45 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Or simply use a Ziploc bag. Or a reusable resealable bag. Or a chip clip. Or a piece of tape.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just eat it all in one sitting

[–] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 1 points 1 week ago

Warp, tomato concentrate, cheese in grill

So good

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ive just folded the tortialla bag in half, store em in tupperware with a lid cuz you can reuse it. But anything is better omg

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

or even rubber bands which are inexpensive.

[–] CoffeeSoldier@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not all bags are compatible with those. You might end up with a goey plastic mess.

[–] viral.vegabond@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

Good point. Replacement with a resealable bag would be a better option.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 36 points 1 week ago

Why worry about "microplastics" when you can inhale the fumes in your home and consume macroplastics in your food!? Mmm, tastes like burning...

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Boomers are fucking crazy with their food! My mom literally can't stop microwaving styrofoam with their food inside it! No wonder cancer rates are absolutely RAGING

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

That, and 347 pesticides in use in the US today.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Cancer rates are going up because people aren't dying from other things first

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

You're wrong, its also going up in young people

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No. Both other causes and cancer are going up, because we've more toxic shit everywhere, and less healthcare than ever.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

More toxic than 40 years ago? Yeah no, not even nearly. They also did not have more healthcare.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 1 week ago

It's not lead now, it's other stuff. It's worse now, or soon will be. PFAS alone is an unimagineable nightmare.

They combine industrial waste with sewage and spread it on fields for ffertilizer. They stopped enforcing the runoff laws that prevented algae blooms from like back 50 years back. To say nothing of the extra round-up.

For instance, in the last 30 years, insect populations worldwide are down 90%. That is new, and even though we don't have rivers catching fire at the moment, or lead in the air, it's worse in many ways.

I take your point though, but the progresses made are being reversed as we speak.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

or any of the plastic ,"even biodegradable" dont microwave more than a minute.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

There many different kinds of plastic, many of which are perfectly safe to put in the microwave for a few minutes.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For all the comments in here, I'm surprised nobody's pointed out there's a good chance she's simply not aware of the health effects. If she's receptive, this could be a good chance to educate her.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 4 points 1 week ago

You can't communicate health concerns about stuff to old people like this, I can't. It's never worked, and more often than not they strangely hate you for it.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Delicious burnt plastic fumes

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Forget fumes, there’s a 0% chance that none of that is making its way into the bag and onto your food.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lemme brush me gums with asbestos

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Toothbrush: Fibers

Asbestos: Fibers

I see nothing wrong with this.

[–] 404@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We all agree this is bad for food safety, but don't you think regular sealing will affect the food as well? Of course melting the edges to seal them will produce some amount of gasses, even if it's not burning, just like warm water will evaporate even if it's not boiling. We shouldn't use plastics for packaging at all.

[–] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But it'd cost an extra 3 cents to use other packaging!

[–] 404@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

...yes, and limit the shelf life of the product, which is plastics' biggest benefit. Air and water tight packaging extends shelf lives to ridiculous lenghts, especially if filled with an inert gas like your typical bag of fresh salad leaves. Besides saving money on produce that would spoil without plastic packaging, alternative packaging would entail changing people's eating habits, especially in the northern hemisphere. But we really need to, you know? :/

omg

your ma has sealed up the cellophane from a pack up butts before, bet. Thats a real easy way to do it, and how we passed weed back in the days haha. That could be where she picked up the habit? Dont matter im dying haha

Why would you seal food this way!? Freaking hilarous, im so sorry haha goodness some folks.

[–] Neverclear@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Oh man, that hits hard in the nostalgias. Not as bad as smoking resin, turning random objects into weed pipes, inhaling hash smoke from hot butter knives... gah, I'm so fucked

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago

Have you tried telling them instead of us?

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 9 points 1 week ago

Did she used to sell small amounts of drugs sealed in a cigarette cellophane by any chance?

[–] mriormro@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Let her know we make real handy, low tech solutions now. Decent example: https://www.oxo.com/oxo-gg-9-piece-clip-set.html

Bonus, it doesn’t kill you (or con, I guess?)

[–] _deleted_@aussie.zone 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tell her to use hair straightener tongs like a normal person

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

dont give her ideas, first she heats the tongs til its red, then straigthen her hair.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

much better to use even plastic boxes meant for storing food, or even ziplock bags. there are plenty glass containers too. metal clips with the neodynium magnets, even is safer.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A few years ago my octogenarian mom became incapable of sealing ziplock bags. It drove me insane because I would repeatedly go to open something like chips or crackers that I had put in ziplocks only to find the seal partly open and the contents stale. I got in the habit of just going through everything in the pantry every couple of hours and resealing all the bags. I thought this was age-related until we hired a mid-20s home helper for her and the helper had the same problem. I don't know what it is -- ziplock bags aren't that hard to use properly.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ziplocks are not all that secure. I had like a huge amount of aspen oyster mushrooms in ziplocks, here in the upper midwest, and they molded, even though they were dry. Same with other stuff. The humidity just seeps in somehow.

There has to be something to add to soak up moisture like the corporos do with that silica bullshit.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Silica bullshit? That stuff is about as save as sand, which it is essentially made of, just with a ton of pores added. And yes, plastic let's water through, tho very very slow compared to other things we are used to. Not sure if that had anything to do with the mold problem you had, even a tiny hole (or the zip lock itself, closed) are FAR more leaky.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Many were double bagged in sealed ziplocks.

Idk about the silica, it's more that it's just not something that's available than health concerns, I looked it up a long time ago and the internet said it was safe.

I was just thinking there could be other substances that are available to a person that could work, like straw or something even, idk.

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Leftovers from the Dinosaur BBQ hmmm

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

That's crazy. Like the fuq

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 2 points 1 week ago

For like 40 bucks you can buy a sealer. It doesn't work well though. Best to not use plastic at all. I hate plastic.

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

That was the official way to seal bags on the McDonald's I used to work.

Heat the spatula on the grill, then place the bag on the grill and press with the tip of the spatula.
