I mean technically you don't have to. If you don't ever plan to come back to the US and the country you are going to doesn't really care about US law you can just go and entirely ignore the fact your a US citizen for the rest of your life. Just don't go somewhere the IRS can try to extradite you from.

You can just shout "I DECLARE STATELESSNESS" as youre boarding the plane/boat/train

You inherited it by birth. It's more of an issue of, under international law, a country cannot make someone stateless. Everyone is entitled to a community and a place to live. When you're a brand new person, we need to establish where that place is. If you want to change it, it's on you to change it.

https://www.unhcr.org/media/1961-convention-reduction-statelessness

A Contracting State shall grant its nationality to a person born in its terri-
tory who would otherwise be stateless. Such nationality shall be granted:

(a) at birth, by operation of law, or

(b) upon an application being lodged with the appropriate authority, by
or on behalf of the person concerned, in the manner prescribed by the
national law. Subject to the provisions of paragraph 2 of this Article, no
such application may be rejected.

Currently 82 states are parties to the convention.

The United States refused to join the convention to maintain the right to voluntarily renounce citizenship when that voluntary renunciation makes a person stateless. The convention bans that practice, because being stateless seriously inhibits a person's ability to work, live, and travel in most countries.

Oh, "they" already have them. Be it MAGA in the US questioning citizenship by birth or here in Germany the AFD which plans to strip it from people they do not considere German enough.

so you expect babies to be born stateless? do you think that would work out well for everyone?

[โ€“] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 hours ago

Because nation states are all about the nation state, not the people imprisoned within them.

Not even sure which place you're taking about or why you have to renounce citizenship.

They might be trying to be one of those sovereign citizens.
