Rules (interactive)

All posts must begin with YSK. If you're a Mastodon user, then include YSK after @youshouldknow. This is a community to share tips and tricks that will help you improve your life.

Rule 2- Your post body text must include the reason WHY YSK:

In your post's text body, you must include the reason "Why" YSK: It’s helpful for readability, and informs readers about the importance of the content.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-YSK posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-YSK posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

If you are a member, sympathizer or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- The majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

Rule 11- Posts must actually be true:

Disinformation, trolling, and being misleading will not be tolerated. Repeated or egregious attempts will earn you a ban. This also applies to filing reports: If you continually file false reports YOU WILL BE BANNED! We can see who reports what, and shenanigans will not be tolerated. We are not here to ban people who said something you don't like.

Rule 12- Linking directly to a video as a source is not acceptable.

Video only posts are responsible for an outsized portion of rules violations. Your post must contain text and meet the requirements of the previous rules.

Rule 13- If you file a report, include what specific rule is being violated and how.

The map is here.

It gives a rundown of different types, shows the directions they're facing, and gives a status ("Active", "Planned", "Decommissioned"). There's also a dataset table if that's more your speed (nerd).

This data is from Flock themselves. The paper behind how this was obtained can be found here. At a glance, seems to roughly line up with OpenStreetMap's catalogue of them (albeit I've seen at least one OSM doesn't cover yet but this new map does; this one is likely quite new, as OSM contributors are pretty good at keeping up).

Why YSK: Flock is late-stage capitalist trash enabling a surveillance state for an increasingly fascist government. For as long as this abomination exists, you should be able to know at all times exactly where your Fourth Amendment rights are being stolen from you.

YSK: Flock is not the only brand of ALPR (Automatic License Plate Reader). Its the brand/company that is receiving the most negative press, which means other companies providing the same service are quietly sneaking into towns and cities.

If you drive in an area covered by an ALPR-networked camera, your vehicle’s movements may already be in a searchable database. As the tools for building these systems become more widely available, the pressure for clearer rules about who may collect vehicle-location data, on whom, and for how long is unlikely to ease

Two website to be stay informed where these cameras are located in your neighbors and or province for Canadians (as well as south of the boarder for US citizens are listed below).

If you find a camera in your neighborhood that appears to be a ALPR feel free to add it to either of the two websites. All locations are added to OSP (Open Street Maps).

As always keep reaching our to your local city council to ask where are these cameras being installed, how long is the information being retained, who is accessing these systems, and who is keeping the individuals accessing these systems accountable?

This website seems to account for that. I was checking the ones in Maui and they're listed as falcon alprs

FYI, "Falcon" is a Flock model, not a separate brand. This website is specifically Flock-branded cameras, but non-Flocks, as stated, are more than welcome on an open knowledgebase like OpenStreetMap.

Oh!.. 😅 Praise your patience.

This kind of even basic information is being deliberately obscured from us; we're just supposed to shut up and treat our occupation by a surveillance corporation as a fact of life. Misunderstandings about it should be treated as an opportunity to build solidarity; I feel happy to have taught you something about it.

This one looks more accurate than others I've seen.

For some reason the previous data showed like 4 cameras near where I live and a lot of people on nextdoor were trying to find them only to find out they never existed.

Kept seeing that same map reposted but on like 5 different websites.

Good to see some solid data coming forward now.

Only available from the US. Da fuq?

There are two websites for Canadians I have posted in a separate comment in this thread. They build on top of what's avaliable in the US maps.
