So this article just popped up on my guardian feed…wild stuff. I’m not a fan of Musk but you gotta admit this is pretty interesting.

“I’m not sure it’s necessarily legal in all jurisdictions,” Musk said, adding that the prototype was “not necessarily a safety optimised car but it takes the fun meter to 11”.

It's not the first by far. There are plenty of small series flying cars. All in the range from 100k to milliions of $.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 0 points 13 hours ago

Yah but none of those have the showboating sales man named elon musk behind them lol #sarcasm

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's so comically stupid that I don't even have anything else to add other than I hope Elon personally tests every single one of these coming off the production line.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago

We can only be so lucky. Wild stuff is it not. There is this weird dichotomy where you have to see it for what it is as publicity stunt, but then also realize there are enough stupid people in the world to look at it and go yah I wanna ride in that…just crazy.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The ludicrously stupid claim that this is the "first" flying car is trivially disprovable by a two second internet search. Elmo missed it by nearly a century, although it really shouldn't surprise anyone at this point to learn that he's lying through his teeth basically every time he opens his mouth. Apparently there are still a couple of people in the world who have learned nothing from the results of his other product announcements including but not limited to "self driving by next year" for the last decade, "bulletproof" glass that can't stop a baseball, and "you'll be able to use your Tesla as a robo-taxi and have it make money for you on the side." These few credulous individuals must exist, because otherwise we wouldn't keep giving him press.

Forgive me if I start sounding like Thunderfoot, here, but where's everybody's 2nd gen Roadster, asshole? Have you refunded those preorders yet? You can't even manufacture the cars you promised everybody that would only go along on the ground.

I suspect the real reason that there was nobody in that car is because it was a prop, stripped out barely functional shell to save weight.

It’s not actually interesting if you’re actually interested in progress that’s useful to mankind and not just masturbatory and ridiculous novelty accessible only by chuds that just exist to show off their ill gotten wealth.

It doesn't fly, it jumps. Those are not rockets, it's compressed air.

I am excited, however, to see people having their day in court due to this machine. "Technically, your honor, I went over the red light, not through it."

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Also I'd say sitting inside during jumps and stuff will act out a bit of strong force on the body and aside that not working for everyone minor failures would be very harmful.

So all in all pretty idiotic to begin with and of course let's not forget that Elon is a literal nazi and still news arrive as if nothing happened.

Epstein files too ofc.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago

Hahaha that would be something that would be on judge judy or whatever the latest daytime tv court drama show is…some would say it’s interesting lol

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (9 children)

You couldn't pay me enough to get into that thing.

you gotta admit this is pretty interesting

Well compared to yawning, mold and the movement of sand dunes I suppose it is.

[–] ennof@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

I think yawning, mold and the movement of sand dunes are pretty interesting.

FYI if anyone was curious this "collaboration" is actually just his way for muddying the waters between Tesla (who is hemorrhaging money) and SpaceX (who is propped up by Gov Contracts thanks to his political connections) and Xhitter (a way to avoid political campaign contributions tracking).

The dude knows Trump is losing power and his money can only keep him out of trouble so much and he fucked up mixing money/resources between companies.

Literally going to be another Elizabeth Holmes.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 4 points 1 day ago

Thank you, this is what i was thinking too. Rumor is Tesla gets folded into Spacex at some point.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Buzz lightyearmobile. This is not flying, it's falling with style.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago

Kind of reminds of those matchbox car ramps and loop de loops with a lot of cool smoke to go with it 😂

[–] SrMono@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago

See him solve problems nobody had…

I hope it sells as good as cybertruck.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So what much needed public infrastructure project is he trying to torpedo now? Amtrak is doing well. People are biking more. Better try to distract some people with this moronic thing.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Good question lol, rumor, and its a tall rumor is tesla is to merge with spacex or xai or whatever the space conglomerate company is called.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

he always unveils something when he has an ulterior motive

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago

Yep! Some grant or merger news is likely to drop soon.

Meh, if you want to jack around with aviation and live on the edge, get a paraglider, gyrocopter, or another ultralight.

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago

Yah, even though they are not mechanically propelled (maybe some strapped a rocket to them 🤔, you can add wing suits to that list as well in my mind.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

There have been more than 1 working flying car prototypes in the past so it's actually not the first one. The problem with a flying car isn't even getting a car to fly; it's how you're going to regulate it for safety when everyone has one.

Whats interesting about it? The possibility to become the worlds first airplane-car-accident victim? Or the excitement of waiting things to malfunction and blow you up?

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

It certainly wouldn't be the first. A plane hit multiple cars last month, unfortunately 5 people were killed.

A EV called the McMurtry Spéirling can do that “drive upside down” trick:

Upside down racecar

A fan under the body + adaptive curtains suck it to the ground like a vacuum cleaner, for extra grip on tracks. IIRC they have patents on the curtains, so Tesla isn’t doing that.

Doing it with compressed air or whatever is… actually kinda impressive. But it seems like it wouldn’t work for very long, and like a significant safety hazard in a crash.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I dunno where it ejects the air, but I bet that thing looks crazy on a gravel road.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Out the back. Top Gear said it vacuumed the dust off their track:

It is most definitely "pavement only" with those tires, anyway.

... but will it go to the Titanic?

[–] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lmao, hummm, how much carbon fiber does it have and is it using an xbox or a ps3 controller to pilot it?

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Does ali-baba sell manpads?
