The lurker shark from Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy that's there to keep you from swimming out too far. Absolutely fucking terrified me, and I think it even vibrates the DualShock 2.

Robocop 2. Cain. I was terrified.

Your example took me a minute to remember what it was from, but yes, Judge Doom definitely deserves a spot on the list.

First Contact is the first Trek media I remember sitting down to watch on purpose. The Borg messed me up for a good while. Dying is one thing, but having your very self be subsumed into a greater whole against your will is freaky.

Communion with Chris Walken. Slept with the lights on that night.

The Stuff scared the fucking shit out of me as a child, I definitely watched it way too young. My mom told me that after watching the movie, she was helping me in the bathroom and she had to leave because the phone was ringing (I was young enough I still needed help to go to the bathroom). When she came back I was standing on top of the toilet lid crying and screaming that the stuff was going to come up out of the toilet and get me.

I haven’t been able to watch it again. I understand it’s a comedy and I would probably enjoy it, but I’m way too fucking traumatized to even try.

Can't remember what name of this movie, but it had in the end a train flying over a destroyed bridge and into a river at the bottom of a ravine. That and corpses and debris floating left it seared in my head for a couple years.

edit: might be this. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074292/

It's a tie between the wicked witch and her monkeys in the Wizzard of Oz and the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Still scary!

The Crate, from Creepshow.

Not a very well-known movie, but the monster in The Funhouse (1981) - see the second clip in the videos section on that page if you want to see him. I don't recall exactly how young I was, but I think between 10 and 12. I randomly watched this on TV one night and had nightmares about it for a while.

It was interesting to see his face again after all this time. A little bit different than I remembered but I still think he's pretty freaky. It was also interesting to learn that this was directed by Tobe Hooper, of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist fame. I guess he has traumatized a lot of kids, just going by this thread.

This fucking guy haunted my nightmares for quite a long time. Haven't seen the movie since then though, maybe it's not that bad

Not a movie, but Unsolved Mysteries.

I was absolutely terrified of being abducted by aliens. would have a panic attack anytime i heard a weird noise or a weird light or a low flying plane at night in by bedroom.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Leatherface. Which is funny because I have never, and still have never seen one of those movies. I do have the original acquired, however, and the plan is to watch it before the month ends. Too busy watching all the Universal horror stuff from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

[–] dualcoreduron@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Poltergeist, Critters, and honestly Earnest Scared Stoopid got me good as a kid. Oh also The Willies! Fuck that movie!

[–] PetteriPano@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I had nightmares from watching critters.

[–] Hamartia@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I'm not 100% what movie I saw as I was very young at the time. It may have been The legend of Boggy Creek. Basically a bigfoot horror. I grew up in the countryside beside a forest: It traumatised me against being outside at night.

[–] LiarAmongAll@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The original Salem's Lot 🤣 the scene where vamp is standing outside the obvious 2nd story window out of nowhere, it gave me nightmares for months, I still hate looking out windows at night. I should try and give it a rewatch, I'm a horror glutton nowadays

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

The book has a vampire baby flying in front of the window.

One of my earliest memories of fear was being at a neighbor's house when I was maybe 3 years old. I didn't understand TV well, and whatever she was watching ended, followed by this intense low music and sound going high and the 80s Viacom V logo getting bigger. With "A Viacom presentation" text. I genuinely thought the V was coming to get me and I hid behind her chair.

Yeah, this fucker. Literally called "The V of Doom" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON6VeY99tl8

Then it didn't get me, and it was fine, but that damn Viacom logo scared the shit outta me.

[–] Lor@leminal.space 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Wizard of oz, mainly the wicked witch.

In the movie "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" there's a scene where a robot kid's face starts drooping, like sliding off the frame or something, and that really got me.
