Sully (Monster Inc) and Shrek

Jurassic Park scared me real bad. Probably too intense for a toddler.

In my youth I was constantly peeking out my window before bed to make sure there weren’t any terminators or Aliens waiting to break into my front facing bedroom window. Watching those at like 10 or younger wasn’t the best

There's three of them that did it for me.

  1. Chucky. Cuz duh, my dad let me watch it when I was far too young, and I had nightmares for weeks.

  2. Return to Oz. The Wizard of Oz sequel that featured a desolate Oz filled with nightmare creatures, and a witch that stole your fucking face.

  3. Some random movie that my older brother and his friends were watching. I came in just in time to see a scene, depicting a female led band on an outdoor stage. A man was brutally beaten in the audience, and the crowd set him on fire. He was desperately rolling around, trying to extinguish the flames, and almost did it, but then the woman lead singer of the band took a swig from a liquor bottle, and spit it out on him. The flames engulfed him, and now he lay motionless. The fear I felt was half from the agony of someone burning alive, and half from the wretched cruelty of the crowd and the lead singer. The mob mentality where nobody helped him, and not just didn't help him, but made it worse. Fucking horrifying. My first glance into the mind of psychopathy.

#3 sounds like a childhood interpretation of a kill in Serial Mom.

that looks like a great movie, but mine was in Black and White... god it really is seared into my brain

I didn't know it at the time, but I saw the bit of Aliens where the pilot got merc'd and everyone was basically fucked. Years later I figured out my persistent nightmare.

When I was 9 I saw Jurassic Park III for a friend's birthday. I had nightmares about dinosaurs for months. But the most distressing part was when the corpse in the parachute falls out of the tree. I still have the image of it seared into my brain.

When I was 6 or 8 ish, my family watched Stepmonster on TV.

The monster scared the absolute pants off of me. I had nightmares for months. In hindsight, not that scary, but at the time? At my age? Terrifying.

I've pretty much loved horror since the Cookie Monster, but The Blair Witch Project scared the shit out me in theaters.

The Gate

There was a scene with adults at the door and then the head comes off and a bunch of demons come out which freaked me the fuck out when I was….I think 7 or 8?

Friday the 13th. My parents didn't really regulate what I watched in terms of violence.

I remember watching That Kiljunen Family (1981) as a kid and being shocked by one particular scene. Summary: This is a Finnish comedy film about a goofball rural family who win a contest and get to go to Helsinki. Goofball Family in Big City level hijinks ensue. The scene that terrified me was the one where the kids go joyriding trams. Probably too speedy for my kid brain.

After my father passed away, I found out that he had this film in his DVD collection, and my mother was like "sure, take all movies you want." (...doubled my DVD collection and then some.) Okay, the tram scene wasn't that bad. Obviously. (...I don't know, the humour hasn't dated the movie, it's just that a lot of the gags are only funny in theoretical sense. I did find one scene funny. One of the kids turns light switch off, it inexplicably cuts power to a whole city quarter, a foreign dignitary gets rescued from an elevator stuck between floors and shouts "down with nuclear energy!")

Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973) scared the crap out of young me... The little creatures lurking in the dark and dragging them away. My older sister reinforcing the fear with stories/teasing didn't help. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Be_Afraid_of_the_Dark_(1973_film) I'm sure it would be laughable now, but my sister really knew how to push my buttons.

[–] anasofia214@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I don’t remember the name of the movie, but it ended with a man walking around in the sewers and merting another man that had shining red eyes, and it was implied that the first man died.

Invaders from Mars (1953)

Don't know how old I was (like 8 or so), but it aired in the afternoon and my parents left the TV on... Didn't sleep for months.

In the 70s apparently showing a horror movie during daytime was okay 🫣

Carry On Screaming

It triggered my first ever nightmare and I suffered from them for a few years after.

"Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte". When that mannequin head fell out of the box and rolled down the stairs I had nightmares for weeks. I was about 6-10 years old when I saw it.

[–] xilophor@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

A Christmas Carol (1984) really fucked with me when I was younger; I think I've rewatched it since and it wasn't that bad

[–] ChaosPilot@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago

Catweazle! I was 4 years old... he looked scary

[–] CyberneticOwl@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Cruella De Vil, both Glenn Close's rendition and the animated version. Funny now, but man did she scare me when I was little.

[–] Defectus@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Do you know which episode it is?
