Unions fought for that shit, bro, it wasn't just "given." This meme erases all their sacrifices

It was a combination of factors. The Soviet Union had established itself as an alternative to capitalist predation, so the "welfare state" began to make sense as a concession from capitalists. Trade unionists and communist organizers on the ground risked revolution, so there was direct incentive to implement it.

Also, it came at the expense of marginalized peoples. Not only did many people not see the benefits domestically, but it was propped up by pilfering surplus value from the global south.

Meanwhile the middle class bots on reddit are endlessly crying about the UK raising the minimum wage. Yeah, how dare the poor get anything if it might slightly impact those on over £40k.

Genuinely heard complaints that we can't raise the minimum wage because it will make the cost of living worse.

No longer on minimum wage myself, but I say crank it as hard as fucking possible, to just below the point it actually causes a significant increase in unemployment. Currently under 5% so its clearly NOT too high yet. I have enough now, I want the guy stacking the shelves in Tesco to have enough too.

And it’s all these middle class people who don’t realize they’re actually upper-lower-class.

Price increases will continue until all moral is low.

Big wars, population shakeups, the board of monopoly is shaken up, the pieces somewhat change hands with exception of those tied most closely to the war machines, and it all happens again in a way that rhymes with the rest of history.

Middle class used to mean the wealthy business owners who weren’t peasants but were also not gentry.

Middle class meant people who owned businesses instead of either owning nothing or owning land.

And the "professional" class which believe it or not has a legal definition, but includes things like doctors and lawyers who might not necessarily own the business they're paid relatively well to work for.

Either way though, small business owners are getting forced out and the ones getting forced out fastest are the ones who understand what's happening.

That's the UK definition of middle class, which is still how they use the term.

In countries without nobility and/or stratified more by wealth based class than hereditary social class, "neither poor nor rich" has been the rough definition since before my boomer parents' parents were born roughly a century ago.

1700s France had a middle class, I recommend that OP check it out.

Our current governments' dismantling of the middle class is against our long-term interests, but boy are they making a bloody fortune.

The middle class is being dismantled by international interests, not nationalist. So they're fine with destroying the bedrock middle class of the USA, because, for one example, China's middle class is doing much better.

They don't want too many middle class, that hits their bottom line.

We need the poors to fight our wars and work on our factory floors.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And when the poors return from the wars and can no longer mend their sores, we gave them the training to settle their scores

Sounds like Germany and what happened there... We just need courage and stop second guessing ourselves. No lone wolf shit but a show of power in the streets. Shut it all down. Terriorism is a rightwing thing but solidarity is a left wing thing.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

And we may need neither in the coming years.

People are like um actualchly middle class has always been around since blah blah and not , should there even be a “lower class” and people in poverty in the first place? Why do so many people think we need a system where poor people exist and deserve to be there because of whatever reasons can be made up.

[–] Miaou@jlai.lu 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Nice strawman. People are calling out "I'm 14 and this is edgy" crap like this post because they exhibit as much political education as the average maga. OP is 2 conspiracies away from blaming the Jews

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

You're way off on this one. What kind of strawman are you talking about? I've seen comments talking about France in the 1700's or the 1500's.

And what are you even trying to say? What conspiracies?? They're asking why a system should have a lower class at all.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

bro look in the mirrror.

[–] Switorik@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Middle class is 150k+/year now. Bills keep going up but pay hardly keeps up.

[–] SpaghettiMaster@feddit.uk 1 points 19 hours ago

Depends what you define it as. Willing to vote against the working class to benefit themselves starts from way lower.

[–] babysmokesalot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Give it time.... The USA will be in flames sooner than later 👍️...... When they call us up to serve thats when it will burn or when the bread gets short which it will. 40 trillion no gas this place is going to explode. As we get closer to the presidential election when trump steals it and the dumdumocrats will let it happen. They all in on it.

The middle class is a socioeconomic structure of society that has existed since the development of agriculture and the resulting food security providing the opportunity for members of a society to do something other than obtain food.

The well-defined and stratified middle class as seen today dates back to the late Middle Ages.

Congrats on being systematically wrong.

[–] K1nsey6@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

A historical middle class and a capitalist middle class are not the same animal. They serve different purposes.

[–] EnsignRoApologist@lemmy.world 0 points 21 hours ago

Show your work.

They serve the same purpose and are the only source of social and political revolution in the last thousand years.
