The actions of Joseph Hedley were horrific and shocking and could easily have had more devastating consequences. “But he has now been brought fully to account for his crimes.

I don't know if the victim agrees that his (unprovoked) attempted murdered having been harshly sentenced to.. stay indoors between 7pm and 7am counts as "brought fully to account".

Honestly It’s heart wrenching to see news headlines like this. And since I’ve had this account for a year it breaks my heart even more. Bc each quarter it seems to be getting worse.

Driver who ~~left cyclist with brain injury~~ hit cyclist following road rage incident ~~avoids jail~~ gets away with attempted murder

The way they soften the headlines is really disappointing.

Things like this, when the legal system does not provide justice or restoration, make vigilantism appealing.

Next: the driver successfully sues the cyclist for causing him trauma.

Like that incident in Belgium. Literally sued the family of the cyclist they killed while under the influence of marihuana

Unlikely. He did have to plead guilty and he got a penalty that's much worse than you'd think from simply reading "avoids jail". Lighter than it should be, and lighter than it would be if a car wasn't involved for sure, but still not as light as the headline is likely to leave the average person thinking.

"He was instead given a two-year supervision order and ordered to stay indoors between 7pm and 7am."

Ya that really isn't that bad for leaving someone with a life altering injury and nearly killing them

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That's exactly as light as I imagined. No idea what Zagorath is talking about.

You seriously thought the guy got a sentence involving house arrest for 12 hours every day? Come off it. Don't lie.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I didn't say I was expecting this exact sentence. I said it's "exactly as light" as I imagined. How hard is it to read?

House arrest with the ability to continue working (so leaving the house during work hours) is pretty common. Really not that hard to guess this was the "lighter than jail" sentence. Same with supervision. And yes, it's ridiculously light for causing permanent injury.

You scratched my status symbol

Technically this doesn’t involve cars at all? The attack was done on foot. The article doesn’t mention the motivation at all. “Unprovoked” is pretty broad. Wish there was more info.

[–] FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.world 20 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

There are videos floating online, there was some sort of verbal altercation followed by this guy getting out of the car and hurling the cyclist to the ground by the neck.

Couldn’t tell you who started the argument but the physical attack was certainly unprovoked and escalatory.

[–] Blibittyblah@futurology.today 5 points 18 hours ago

Probably a right of way argument.

I've noticed a lot of fuckcars is really more like fuck people and is sort of loosely related to cars.

An altercation stemming from a dispute about vehicular traffic is not "loosely related to cars". Road rage isn't isolated to only ramming things with your car. "Car brain" isn't something that disappears as soon as you step out of the vehicle.
