Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

on Thunderbird for Android the push connection and the new mail alerts are separate settings, which catches a lot of people. check Manage folders > Inbox and make sure both Enable Push and Notifications are on, then Settings > your account > Notifications > New mail notifications. if it still only turns up when you open the app, set its battery usage to Unrestricted, and on Android 13+ allow "Alarms & reminders" for it (that's in the app's system settings, not under permissions). FairEmail is worth a try too if you get fed up with it.
FairEmail on Android and kmail integrated with kontact on desktop
Sterna Mail, because there are only two jmap clients actually and sterna is one of them.
FairEmail on Android, Thunderbird on desktop.
Proton Mail web app for desktop and Proton Mail app for mobile. Before Proton I used the Samsung mail app on my phone and gmail web on desktop.
BetterBird
Selfhosted mail for the past 25+ years. For clients I use mutt with offlineimap on the desktop, K9 on my phone, and, Apple Mail on my iPad. I don’t love Apple Mail, but the available alternatives all seem much worse.
thunderbird, currently...
Same. Works good.
K9 Mail (mobile) Outlook 365 (desktop)
I also recently purchased a domain name, and set-up paid e-mail account(s) at Purelymail with that domain.
How is Purelymail so far? I finally bought a domain name months ago, and haven't settled on a e-mail provider yet. And are you using a catch-all email address?
I haven't yet used it that much. I did set up catch-all.
So far I like it. It's centered around users and routing. You can create as many users as you like, and as many addresses as you like. However, instead of adding aliases, you add addresses to routing.
There is a simple from/to interface with "Any address", "Any address except valid user addresses (catchall)", "Any address starting with", and "The exact address".
There's also option of using Sieve scripts, but I have no idea how to use that.
Any address on your domain can be routed to any address. If you however want multiple Purelymail addresses, you'll have to create a user for each address.
The users really are separate, with their own login credentials, and optionally restrictions on addresses they can send from.
Everything is prorated when it comes to billing, including the yearly payment which is calculated per day. This is withdrawn from credit.
For webmail they use Roundcube, which is OK in my opinion.
Anyway, I think best you can do to figure out if you'd like them is to look at their documentation:
https://purelymail.com/docs/
https://support.purelymail.com/support/solutions
Oh, and they are also building an API: https://news.purelymail.com/api/index.html (currently in preview)
You can also set-up TLS requirements for sending/receiving as well as ignoring DMARC p=reject. Default is TLS 1.2 for both sending and receiving, and conforming to DMARC policies of sender.
Something to note is last year they said they plan to increase prices as $10/year is not sustainable: https://news.purelymail.com/posts/updates/2025-12-18-roadmap-2026.html
Just Gmail app on phone and in browser otherwise. I was planning to move to proton but they have issues. Self-hosting is bad for me in terms of time (I work two jobs on top of house/yard maintenance) and people report issues with not-long-esrablished domains. I'll figure something out, but it's way down on my priority list at this point

I didn't know they had an email client. Makes sense though, they have their own version of pretty much everything else.
Nextcloud mail on both :P
iPhone’s built-in mail client and Thunderbird on desktop technically, though in reality I normally use webmail.
I haven’t found a single client for Linux that I like, they’re all shit really. I don’t know why they find it so difficult. They all try to inundate you with features and overcomplicate it. I mean, don’t clutter my screen up with shit and just show me my fucking emails. Why’s it so hard? I want something like the Windows 10 email client but I want it on Linux. One side of the window should list my emails, and in a larger pane it should show the email content. I want a pop up to give me a small preview of the email when I get a new one and if I have clicked it in a few seconds it should fuck off. Simple.
I’ve been hunting for an iOS mail client that will just support decent forced plaintext for so long I might just build my own at this point. I don’t want your fonts and colors and “generous” white space to tell me how much my electricity bill was this month
I can’t find a decent free mobile email that I can plug into my default iOS app like Gmail.
The last place I worked used Thunderbird, so when I went to my current job and they used standard Gmail, I immediately downloaded Thunderbird.
On my phone, I just use the default Gmail app. It's not nearly as painful as the website.
Thunderbird on desktop.
Outlook on mobile
