Finding good Discord servers relevant to your interests can be tough unless you sift through Discord's own database or get an invite to one.

The popular messaging and chat service is looking to solve that problem with an obvious yet big change to the platform. Discord will now make public servers discoverable through Google Search.

On Tuesday, Discord announced that starting Nov. 16, 2026, all Discoverable Servers will receive a Server Web Page. These public Server Web Pages will include summaries of discussions happening in that public server. In addition, starting in mid-December, some messages within these servers will be made publicly accessible on the Server Web Page. There will be no need for visitors to join the server or even have a Discord account in order to see these messages.

So discord is becoming more and more like a forum replacement? This feels like the same direction they've already been going in with more server and community features. It is also being used more and more as a forum but without a lot of the features that make forums good, like them usually being open, while discord isnt, or wasnt. This just makes me wonder what discord is trying to be... a private chatroom like it started out as or some kind of forum like reddit?

Hopefully this mission confusion makes people look for alternatives.

I really like these changes. I know quite a few people who refuse to use Discord for obvious reasons I don't think I have to elaborate on, especially in this community. So soon they can still read about what is going on without having to create an account and join the server.

Another positive note is that these pages might be indexed by search engines, so answers that previously only could be found on Discord by joining the respective server and searching there are now more accessible to everyone.

Of course the primary intent is to show non-discord users what they are missing out on and therefore get them to join the plattform, driving up user numbers, but it still does bring some benefits to everyone as well.

This might mean there will be some useful information appearing online which previously went to forums and has since been lost, but on the other hand this is not great for privacy.

Is there a way to disable it? I don't see the settings they mention in the article, but it does say my server is discoverable.

Turn your server private, invite-only

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 hours ago

Turns out it only applies to servers with over 1000 users.

This absolutely means Google is going to use the messages to train Gemini.

edit: rather, whatever LLM Discord will be using to "summarize messages" will be using them as training data. Not sure which one they're using.

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Doesn't it mean that all the LLM companies will train on the messages?

[–] senseamidmadness@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 2 hours ago

The article was titled poorly and doesn't have much detail in it (probably because the press release was vague itself) so I'm guessing. It sounds like Discord themselves will be scraping all the public servers with LLM's in order to generate a "summary" of all the messages and put it on a public webpage for each server. If the big LLM companies can only get summaries then they can't use those as training data.

It's unclear from the article, as it says Discord is posting public-facing Server Web Pages that "contain summaries". No info on how the summaries are generated.

I probably guessed wrong before, as if it's not access to the raw messages then there's not good AI training data. Is Discord going to be scraping the servers and summarizing with LLM's? That sounds likely.

What the fuck? At least have some LLM summarize conversations… Whatever, it’s not like Discord has any consideration for user privacy

[–] Anarki_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

It says there will be summaries.

[–] ComradePedro@lemmy.ml -1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

But is it also going to reveal user messages or only summaries?

read the article, my man 😭
