They saw Discord and thought it's a great idea?

This is about monetizing AI scraping, right? Gonna be interesting to see how Reddit handles the bubble popping. They've torpedoed the regular user experience for it.

No, they tried that already and it turned out that they alienated all of their mobile app users for basically a one time check from Google. Now they are on to alienating a bunch future users who might have created an account after finding some useful information on reddit.

I almost want to go get an MBA just so I can write a case study on why spez is a fucking clown

Lol, good. This will destroy their traffic as Google searches will end in a login request.

“During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week. If this rate of decline continues, current trends would suggest that total DAUqs [or daily active unique users] could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs,” Huffman wrote.

Huffman would like Reddit to become less dependent on search referrals. “Logged-in and app DAUq are our most valuable users, and they are our primary focus,” he wrote.

Reddit plunges as Google AI search squeezes traffic

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Shares of Reddit (RDDT.N), tumbled 23% in premarket trading on Friday after it warned Google's growing use of AI in search was hurting referral traffic and could shrink its user ‌base, offering fresh evidence of AI-driven disruption.

  • Reddit's warning highlights how Google's shift toward AI-powered search, which can answer queries directly, is disrupting the flow of traffic to websites that have traditionally relied on the search engine for users
  • Total daily active unique visitors could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from about 130 million if referral traffic continues to fall, Reddit said

Bit too late to "protect reddit's valueable data". First off, fuck you it's not your data. 2nd, you've already sold everything, what is left to protect?

They've been doing something like this for a while, forcing you to use the app on mobile at least. How does this effect reddit (privacy) frontends?

I use the Orion browser on iOS with uBlock Origin and the when I go to one subreddit I still lurk, it locks the whole browser telling me to use the mobile app such that I can’t scroll to kill the tab and have to close the whole browser. If I want it to work, I end up having to begrudgingly use Brave.
