Halloween is the one night of the year that I get to hand candy out to children, who I do not know and it is socially acceptable. So tonight is the night I get to do it!

I have also gotten into the hobby of Homelabbing, so it is Halloween and I could not figure out why my Ring light was not staying on. Home Assistant could not turn it on nothing, I was spinning the gears in my head what was not working? I looked at it and I saw the little blue light flashing, I thought that was weird why is it flashing. I found my phone and went into the Ring app and it was saying it could not find the light? Then I thought well I will just need to maybe turn it off and on again, nope the blue light just kept flashing. So than I thought I would just reset it and make it join wifi again, when I turned it on into pairing mode I remembered that I had yet to give it access to my IoT wifi network. So it had been working on its schedule and motion detection with no way of telling me anything and I did not realize this over sight until today. So always remember that you need to get everything to rejoin your wifi if you make changes, like adding a IoT subnet!

On top of that I was panicking that I could not find the wifi code in the stupid theme I have on OpenWRT, luckily there is a command for that “cat /etc/config/wireless” entered that and I could get the password easy peasy.

I hope people are downvoting the Ring and not the joy of Halloween.

I am guessing so

Thanks for adding all those children to Amazon's tracking network.

I have that blocked, things in my IoT subnet do not have access to the internet.

I didn't know HA could pilot Ring stuff.

Sure can, but because it is not attached to the internet video is not offered. I am sure I could find a way to do it but I do not care enough to do that.

Ah. Thanks for letting me know.

If you want to hand out candy to children year round, you could consider becoming a tree? Saw this guy on the weekend, handing out lollipops to kids at the playground while playing the saxophone: https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/17-07-2022/have-you-seen-the-walking-talking-tree-of-wellington

Full disclosure, doing this may get you shot in the US, and this is not that unusual for Wellington NZ, we're just kinda like this.

What does your IoT network look like? A second wifi router? Mesh?

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I have a Flint 2 with a vanilla install of OpenWRT with 4 or 5 different AP, than 8 or 9 different vLANs.

Why the fuck anyone need to use software to turn on light

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is not the right community to ask "why?" in.

I love this remark!

If you can't think of a reason, you're lacking creativity.

[–] Xiaopai@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Because software allows you to turn it on remote or automatically according to some logic (scheduling, presence detection etc.) rather than having to manually connect a circuit at a predefined physical location.

I dunno, businesses have done it for decades.

Intregrating it with HA and keeping control totally on our own systems sounds convenient.
