I prefer it personally. I'm not a fan of games where combat is decided by reaction times and is high energy. I prefer to use proper preparation and strategy to win fights. And turn based is best for that. I'm also not a fan of "dice roll" style game mechanics for the same reason. Like Fallout New Vegas's speech system > Fallout 3's speech system. Because its based on a set skillcheck instead of a dice roll adjusted by your skill.
Slay the Spire 2. You start from being able to deal 6 damage per card and scale your way up to crazy numbers, each play gets you to choose different playstyles based on what cards you get and pick.
Really loving Persona 5 Royal. Though I'm enjoying the life sim more than the action, I do still like turn based games, all the way back to FFVII on the PS1.
Caves of Qud
Absolutely! I would also add CogMind.
Birth of the Federation
(Most of my other ones have been said already)
Persona 5
Expedition 33
Many deckbuilder roguelikes I've played (chrono ark, lost branch of legends, slay the spire, ...) but that might not be what you meant
monmusu quest paradox rpg (warning extremely nsfw)
Ok i was gonna spoiler the last one for mild comedic effect but i forgot how to spoiler tag on here and gave up
Star Wars knights of the old republic was the only game I enjoyed turn based combat. Generally I donβt like turn based combat. I prefer real time combat like command and conquer or supreme commander.
I recently played Chained Echoes, and it was alright for being a fairly blatant Chrono Trigger/SNES era Final Fantasy ripoff. Decent combat, great sprite work, ridiculous story. JRPGs used to be my favorite genre, then they kinda went to shit IMO. They are making something of a comeback with people my age being nostalgic about the good ones making similarly good ones again.
Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter (Wildlands boardgame reskin)
Like an ultimate crossover story from 2000AD. Stronts, Judges, and Slaine battling it out.

Into the Breach
Quite good.
Fallout
Dragon Quest series is roundly awesome
FFX will always be my favorite, I still think it's the best story of the franchise. Other ones I like are Golden Sun, FFIV, Super Mario RPG, Crono Trigger was good too (just played that for the first time). Lufia I and II are worth mentioning while I never beat them start to finish I was often at a friends house who had them and watched a good deal of it. I'm gonna try to play those soon, I recall liking the story but I can't remember too much of it anymore.
Fallout and Fallout 2, natch
Tiiiiime ago:
Vandal Hearts
and later:
Battle for Wesnoth
I don't play videogames anymore, but the last is an opensource absolute gem, still developed and continuously improved.
Vandal Hearts ! Great tactics game
Most of the time, I hate turn based combat. For instance Xcom 2 was not fun for me. I really enjoyed playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup though.
I'll throw in one with a real-time turn-based combat system: Megaman Battle Network The actual fight part is real time but you get to do the strategy part in turns
I play JRPGs a lot, but the best one to do this right is Etrian Odyssey, mostly because you can make combat (inputting + animations) really fast, and make even normal enemies interesting challenges. People don't complain about having to wait for your foe in chess, and that's because it doesn't take you 5 seconds to move a pawn, and the foe is usually a fair challenge. (Arguably, video games can be even better at this than chess, because the AI doesn't need time to think. Instead of smarts, it usually has the stat advantage)
SMT(including Persona) generally does this fine, and Fire Emblem can either look decent with animations off, or speedy enough even with them (most of the time is spent thinking than waiting, either way - the goal). Those are my top 3 series.
On the opposite end, mainline Pokemon might be the worst turn-based combat I ever played, even if the mechanics are solid. I don't want to wait 3 seconds just for "crit + effectiveness + fainted" to display, even more so if most of trainers and random fights aren't challenging.
Yes.
Anything by Julian Gollop (all the way back to Chaos, Rebelstar, and up to Phoenix Point)

Grandia and Grandia 2. Atlantica Online.
Disgaea, dood.
the x-com reboot games are great
some people like chess
The Like a Dragon games from the Yakuza series are turn based. You can move around and interact with the environment and party members during character turns, so I feel a bit more involved than just issuing a command.
I didn't think I'd enjoy it after the more brawling style of gameplay in the other games, but it works well for the story, and they feel like their own thing rather than just another iteration of the same with a different MC.
Diplomacy is amazing, although I've only played it a few times and not at a high level.
I do prefer it for games with stat-based combat. PokΓ©mon, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Baldur's Gate 3, Pillars of Eternity, Into The Breach
Wasteland 3 (I've only played that one)
