My style hasn't changed since I was maybe around ten. I'm well into adulthood now and wondering if I fit into any subculture since I have some American friends who are around my age and they know theirs and typically hang out with people of their subculture, so I feel like an odd one out here. I'm deeply into drawing weird art, like colourful monsters that are Mario inspired. I'm also into emulation, tattoo design, and making mods for games. I'm a tomboy and never wear makeup. Fashion, my wardrobe consists of tracksuits and trainers, sometimes a cap or fabric coats with a plaid pattern on them. I'll dress like this no matter where I am or what I'm doing. I'll sometimes wear gold jewellery like bracelets. I don't do anything with my hair besides keep it neck length and curly. I'm a big fan of music and that consists of UK garage, deep house and DnB. I'd love to go to music festivals and just go wild. I've been non conformist/rebellious since I was tiny

edit: am a woman for context lol

Ignore trying to identify and fit into some niche subculture. Instead, just make friends based on your interests. Let any subculture participation emerge naturally. There is no need to granularly define and name and restrict yourself to one thing or social group and this can actually be arbitrarily limiting and divisive.

For example, find some friends to safely go to music events with. Sounds like that's something you'd like to do.

your subculture is you. it is the best subculture to have.

Idk the name for it,but this is a common vibe I see here in my US college town. It is a type of art student that doesn't come from a rich background. I think the best name I think of off the top of my head would be something like "Post tumbler alternative" or "midwestern underground goth" ? Idk, the name doesn't matter.
The point is, your people are out there and if you keep looking, you'll find your tribe eventually.

usually subcultures form around music, games, movies ... sounds like you found yours already? the festivals you go to certainly attract people you can connect with, no?

[–] ILoveDurians@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I actually have never been to a festival even though I really want to!

[–] phr@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

sorry missread that.

but yeah ... one of the most embarassing thought i ever had was, "i wanna be a goth". at a point at which i was already pretty much integrated in my local community of sorrows. i wanted to match my cool new friends. for the wrong reason.

i am embarassed of this bc at the time i thought it would be important to belong to group and be good at that. i was a little in love with the clichees.

do what you genuinly like and find people who you can share with. that's all there is about subcultures. the rest follows. people who hang out a lot tend to converge in style and habit.

They just want a label they can claim.

They're not asking for a subculture, they're asking for a descriptor to feel unique.

Typical teenager stuff

No I mean like if there’s a name for it or if I’m just a normie lol

The friends I have are a lot different to me and they know what subculture they belong in, so most of their friends are like that too. I’m just curious and wondering what mine is, if any, so I can better find more people like me if that makes sense?

If all of your friends are in completely different groups, you may be one of the rare Chameleons.

As opposed to the people who surround themselves with like minded people, you prefer the novelty of new and different perspectives. Chameleons get along well with many groups because they are great at listening and learning about the subcultures of others. You may not get into the nitty gritty, but you understand what they're about, and can carry on a conversation with them and their "insert subculture" friends.

This reads like one of the results on a personality quiz.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I Chameleon to those sometimes too

i consider myself more of a collector. I find interesting people and pick them to be friends, kind of like how you fall in love with a fancy cheese. if my friends aren't stinky enough, they can't come over or something i can't remember how it works anymore.

I notice autistic traits in most of my favorite conversation partners. I often wonder if others see them in me as well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I appreciate their passion and honesty.

When it comes to this type of things there are two camps or scenarios:

  1. You give yourself a label and define it through your actions. "I'm Emo, because I said so". This is how many subcultures name themselves, social groups of the same interest give themselves a descriptor and run with it. Usually around a shared taste in music genre.

A. You do you spontaneously, then other people give you a label to describe you. Then groups usually adopt the name and run with it. A lot of labels come from this scenario as well.

The point is that both scenarios also interact and dialogue. Some people redefine the label through their actions, usually from terms that started as derogatory insults and are then appropriated by the in group then redefined as an identity. Sometimes self chosen labels are then reinterpreted by the public and resignified by the out group.

It's all very fluid and always changing. Don't fret too much over it. Whatever label you define yourself or get assigned to today might as well mean nothing in a couple of years because culture is alive and constantly moving.

Subcultures are so dumb, just be yourself mate. If you're unhappy with yourself, change something about it, if you're not, who cares? You can do anything regardless of the way you present yourself optically.
