Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

I'm against nationalism and militarism. I'm a fucking pinko pacifist most of the time. I don't usually use words like national pride and military honour. But the sheer dishonour coming out of this little man's big mouth is making me dizzy. You have a country that is fighting for its independence on its eastern front against an enemy that specifically wants to erase them as a distinct nation. 3 years in a war they've given everything for. When they've built up the largest European military this side of the Russian lines. When they've innovated and changed the very nature of warfare, single handedly inventing 21st century tactics. When ordinary people have quite literally put down their lives and their futures to fight for their freedom and their country. When at the highest level they've endured abuse and scorn by petty tyrants like Trump and like this little motherfucker, when they have done everything they can, mortgaged their children's future, traded away their minerals, the blood of their country just to keep going. If there was ever proof written in the blood of Heroes of "sovereignty", they have provided it thousands of times over.

And this little man has the audacity to run his mouth and say something as petty as this? On their exposed western border? Literally talking shit behind their exposed backs?

He brings dishonour to the Magyar nation.

A'ight, let's play this game.
Hungary is not a sovereign country, it's historically just part of Austria.

For anyone wondering this is some bad quote or something, no. He literally says "what if lets say hypothetically they did fly in for a few meters, what does it matter, ukrain is not an sovereign country". My translation isnt 100%, i hate translating between hungarian and english, but you get the point.

And Europe is silent when Orban is speaking.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

We are silent when our Ally kills thousands of people on purpose and starves people to death so why would we speak up against a racist autocrat among us?

Chapeau! I guess one could say most leaders in europe envy Orban, with his control over national media and the countries institutions.

On the other hand i see fellow protesters in germany arrested for speaking out against an apartheid state and a complicit media afraid to speak out clearly against the horrors commited by the israeli regime.

The leader i am currently most pissed at, is for obvious reasons (being German), Kanzler Merz. But the former government has just been as complicit and what makes it worse is that they pretended to be left leaning. Makes me want to puke.

Although there’s still democracy and freedom in the eu, it’s quickly waning. I really hope we can turn things around and become a place of democracy and freedom once again.

While i do still have hope to eventually have democracy again i doubt that our system can be saved as we still can not stop even the destruction we are part of.

I know it might be tiring to hear it, but if we can't even solve the crisis in the middle east, a situation we help on NOT solving, i don't see a way forward. Which values are left in government but the blind service to our current economic model? Every decision, chat-control aswell, is a tool to keep our economy, dependent on instability and oppression, running.

By now everyone should know that nothing of this is done in favor of the human race or even the population these governments pretend to represent. Representation only works when you represent the will of those people. Not even real pretense is left. Instead all i hear is why we can't have what we need (affordable housing, good health, working infrastructure, public transport just to name a few) and instead need to offer more of that to our "god", the economy.
