I thought part of the reason for increased ram prices was a shortage of chips and not the assembly of ram modules

It may be a viable option if you have a source of e-waste to salvage the chips from. Of course that will mean even more work since the chips will have to be reballed.

I’m not sure there’s many DDR5 sticks of ram that are ewaste. Most probably still work just fine unless they were DOA and tossed.

Not a terrible idea if you have a good process. Not sure my hand is steady enough to do it without a bga machine, but solder paste, custom masks, and a diy rig for lowering the chip could possibly do it.
