Organisers clarify award ‘cannot be revoked, shared or transferred’ after Venezuelan opposition leader’s comments

The organisers of the Nobel peace prize have said it “cannot be revoked, shared or transferred” after Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, said she wanted to give her award to Donald Trump.

When Machado was named Nobel laureate in October, it was seen as a snub by the White House, despite Machado rushing to dedicate the prize to the US president and his “decisive support of our cause”.

Trump has made no secret of his strongly held desire to be awarded the Nobel peace prize, the winner of which is selected by an independent five-person committee in Oslo.

"Spineless cunt is denied the opportunity to bend over for immature tyrant" - FTFY

[–] MareOfNights@discuss.tchncs.de 49 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

From her perspective it's the correct move. To gain back control of the country a Nobel prize will not be helpful, American support will.

This would get the democratically elected government in charge, instead of Maduros cronies.

If the American president is that easy to bribe, that's a problem for the US. She's just playing by the new rules.

America shouldn't be anywhere near Venezuela, but if you get handed a Deus ex machina, you take it.

[–] Chaotic_Altruist@lemmy.zip 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I totally agree that's how it looks for her. It's an example of a prisoners dilemma.

Short term it's best to just make trump happy and try to salvage sanity from the bullshit.

Long term though, she's just validating all the bullshit trump is doing, adding to his power, and telling him that if he screams loud enough he will always eventually get his way. Trump will be a worse person, Venezuela will be a temporary reprieve and then be worse off, and the whole world has a larger mess to clean up.

World would be so much better if people didn't fall prey to prisoners dilemmas and actually made the best long term decision for everyone every time. Might be getting too late to ever see that world tbh.

Bottom line is nobody should be feeding the orange infant.

More in general, "American support" isn't necessarily a positive thing in the mid or long terms, especially in Latin America and even more in the present age when Fascism is normalized in American and Fascists get elected to lead the US.

For her it risks being like a drowning person getting a nose to put around her neck to be pulled out of the water.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago

Except no she doesn't care about Venezuelans if she did she wouldn't cheer on their bombing and blockading and promise to hand over all resources to America.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

The only country that needs to worry about democratic elections is not Venezuela.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

it's incredibly shameful how these oposition figures are so quick to give away their country to the Orange Pedo for a shot at the presidency… not a thought about the Venezuelan people

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 2 weeks ago

She pretty much conspired with trump from the get-go to remove maduro.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

Not spineless greedy and imperialist she is not giving in to demands she has long advocated for turning all Venezuelan resources over to American companies.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Eh, I could see it as a reasonable deal from her perspective. If giving Trump a pointless shiny metal disk got him to actually back democratic reform in Venezuela, sure, give him the shiny metal disk. Whatever, it's just a thing.

Unfortunately it wouldn't work, though; Trump never sticks to his deals after he's got what he wanted out of them or when he sees an opportunity to squeeze even more out of you. So might as well keep the shiny metal disk.

It makes sense that one who is spineless would naturally be bent over.

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 59 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Imagine wanting to become president so bad, you promise to give your Nobel prize to the guy who just invaded your country, in the hopes that he will stage a coup for you, but then your plans are suddenly foiled because the Nobel prize committee said no, and that's a dealbreaker for Trump's support because he is the most superficial man on the planet. I suppose she can just give him her physical medal, which will make him happy because it's shiney.

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 14 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

He will also just claim he is now the Nobel laureate, no matter what the committee says, and some time next year he will make it a huge diplomatic incident when he is not added to some official list of laureates.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah the way the media works these days, it doesn't matter what the committee says. If she says she gave it to him and he says he's the new winner, than that's all that most people will ever hear about.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yeah, I'm surprised that she actually asked the Nobel Comittee about it - just give Trump the medal and shut up whilst he loudly harps about how he has a Nobel Peace Prize.

It's not as if that guy cares about objective reality or rules (or even has a fully adult mind) - having the shiny token is more than enough for him to go around showing it and saying he has a Nobel Peace Prize.

The most logical option for her is just giving the medal to Trump, telling him he now has a Nobel Peace Prize and letting his infantile mind twist that into him feeling like a Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

[–] andallthat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I will give him my Nobel prize too if he stops invading (and threatening to invade) countries and finally stops that one russian invasion. It's really shiny!!

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I suppose she can just give him her physical medal,

as if that wasn't part of the deal

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 44 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, she doesn’t deserve it either

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 40 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

They should rescind the award for even suggesting the idea..

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Well since she's having a gun to her head, I kinda understand the gesture. She is walking on water thin ice here. On the one hand she has a country she wants to survive and, you know, not being plundered by the cheeto, and on the other hand... I don't know, it's trump, you fill it in....

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They should rescind the Nobel Peace Prize committee of clowns.

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I guess we all should. Fuck the Nobel Peace Prize committee, and also fuck FIFA. We need a new peace prize with blackjack and hookers.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

One begins to question how she was awarded the prize in the first place

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 weeks ago

She wants capitalists to run Venezuela.

[–] vegeta@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

Just found out and believe me, people are VERY upset that the Nobel Peace Prize is NOT transferable. Amazing. After all the peace, the deals, the HISTORIC calm (tremendous calm, many people are saying THE MOST CALM IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD), they say ‘sorry, rules are rules.’ Meanwhile Obama gets one for showing up. Didn’t even DO ANYTHING! I finished wars, avoided wars, brought about peace very strongly — NO PRIZE. If it were transferable (like common sense says it should be), they’d be sending it over immediately. Very unfair system, very political, very Scandinavian. RIGGED! SAD! I should have a prize for each of the 8 WARS I SOLVED. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!

... christ, I have no idea if this is legit or not. Maybe... No? Just because he'd have to admit defeat?

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I don't know. It was going alright, but that Scandinavian burn has got to hurt.

To the Norwegian Nobel Committee

I hereby humbly suggest that the Peace Prize for 1939 is awarded the German Chancellor and Führer Adolf Hitler, a man, who in the opinion of millions of people, is a man who more than anyone in the world has deserved this highly respected reward. Authentic documents reveal that in September 1938 world peace was in great danger; it was only a matter of hours before a new European war could break out. The man who during this dangerous time saved our part of the world from this terrible catastrophe was without no doubt the great leader of the German people. In the critical moment he voluntarily did not let weapons speak although he had the power to start a world war.

By his glowing love for peace, earlier documented in his famous book Mein Kampf – next to the Bible perhaps the best and most popular piece of literature in the world - together with his peaceful achievement – the annexation of Austria-Adolf Hitler has avoided the use of force by freeing his countrymen in Sudetenland and making his fatherland big and powerful. Probably Hitler will, if unmolested and left in peace by war mongers, pacify Europe and possibly the whole world.

Sadly there still are a great number of people who fail to see the greatness in Adolf Hitler´s struggle for peace. Based on this fact I would not have found the time right to nominate Hitler as a candidate to the Nobel Peace Prize had it not been for a number of Swedish parliamentarians who have nominated another candidate, namely the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. This nomination seems to be poorly thought. Although it is true that Chamberlain through his generous understanding of Hitler´s struggle for pacification has contributed to the saving of world peace, the last decision was Hitler´s and not Chamberlains! Hitler and no one else is first and foremost to be thanked for the peace which still prevails in the greater part of Europe; and this man is also the hope for peace in the future.

As Chamberlains obviously can claim his share of the peace making, he could possibly have a smaller part of the Peace Prize. But the most correct thing to do is not to put another name beside the name of Adolf Hitler and thereby throwing a shadow on him. Adolf Hitler is by all means the authentic God-given fighter for peace, and millions of people all over the world put their hopes in him as the Prince of Peace on earth.

I don't see what's the problem with that.

It's not as if, after giving one to Kissinger, the nobel peace prize is anything more than a bitch to political propaganda.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

That request from Trump was a "test of spine".

Now that he made sure she has none, she will be chewed with the rest.

Maria, he's not going to grab you by the pussy.

Stop trying to get him to grab you by the pussy.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

She at least forty years too old for that.

Guess she's not becoming prez after all.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Leave it up to trump to put a gun to somebody's head and threaten to kill them unless they hand over their Nobel peace prize.

The levels of asshole and dumb here is again amazing.

In that aspect I kinda impressed by trump, in a sick, twisted sense, that is. Every time I think the asshole has hit rock bottom, somehow he just keeps digging and actually get himself deeper, still. Going on like this, he might actually find and pass hitler on his way down.

[–] Ach@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I don't think he's as stupid as we all think he is. Well, I do and I don't. Ever have a friend who just got musical theory from a young age? Trump is a grade A dumbass except when it comes to being a calculated piece of shit. I've never seen anyone more successfully opportunistic with dipping their toes into what they can get away with than him. It's honestly an impressive, albeit morally bankrupt skill.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

The Nobel committee is a joke

[–] falcon_1683@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago

I hate this bitch.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

The fact that she offered to share a Peace Prize with that fucking crybaby should earn her a second Peace Prize.

[–] DisgruntledPelican@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

She should share it with Putin, Trump and Netanyahu, it would be so perfect and accruate.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Take it back dynamite guilt club. Take it back.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Remember me again how trump getting the noble peace prize fixes the economy, gets ICE agents off our streets, ends the genocide in Gaza, ends the war in Ukraine, lowers the cost of fuel, food, housing, gets the Epstein files released in full? Oh yea that’s right it doesn’t.

[–] DERRALEXANO@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Piece of shit prize more like

[–] ClownStatue@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

What does Norway have that he can threaten to take? I feel like that’s coming.

[–] dantheclamman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The committee tried to appease Trump by offering it to a Venezuelan right winger. They learned the lesson so many have learned; that these people cannot be met halfway, if you give them an inch they WILL take a foot.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

The Nobel Peace Prize is and has always been a joke. No one takes it seriously, or ever has. Adolf Hitler was nominated.

[–] venusaur@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Come on. She’s going for the big leagues. She’ll lose her soul, but she’ll be rich, relative to her colleagues.
