UPDATE: Gov Walz and team said that rushing to the zone would dilute security resources and that protesting back in their respective home districts would be more impactful to the larger cause.
House Democrats have been privately advised by their leadership not to travel to Minnesota in support of anti-ICE protesters there, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: Several Democratic politicians have made the trek in recent days, including Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and New York congressional candidates Brad Lander and Micah Lasher.
But in an email to Democratic congressional offices dated Monday, a copy of which was obtained by Axios, a senior staffer for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) urged members to remain in their districts for security reasons.
The guidance comes amid a heightened threat environment for members of Congress, including recent attacks on Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.).
What they're saying: "In speaking with the [Minnesota] delegation offices and the Governor's team it has become clear that the best thing for Members to do right now is to support their MN colleagues by participating in the Days of Action in their home district this week," the staffer wrote.
"Visiting the state right now, although well intentioned, puts a burden on local resources and does not support our colleagues, the city and state government, local law enforcement and most importantly the people of Minneapolis."
The authenticity of the email was confirmed to Axios by two staffers who received it.
What we're hearing: That guidance has also been shared through informal channels, one House Democrat, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal conversations, told Axios.
"Minnesota elected officials cautioned members from going as it could add strain and overwhelm local law enforcement," the lawmaker said.Thank you.
This includes important context that people should keep in mind that the incendiary headline glosses over.
The only thing I see local law enforcement doing is occasionally protecting ICE, so I'm not sure why they'd be overwhelmed.
They freely ignore state and federal judges, they openly violate constitutional rights, they get mad and do a little ultra violence before a vacation. What can state police do besides witness and deescalate around the edges?
Literally arrest them. You just listed a bunch of criminal actions. Cops arresting criminals is their whole raison d'être.
Being willing to be a criminal doesn't mean you're immune to law enforcement nor does just declaring immunity. And even if they do beat the charges, cops have been punishing people with arrests that won't stick for their entire existence.
Cops 100% could be pulling over rented minivans with no plates. In the worst case they get some dash cam footage of ICE refusing a lawful order. They don't because this is what they voted for.
This isn't just cowardice it is sabotage.
It would be betraying the Republican Party for whom they work for.
It is so frustrating that people don't realize the democrats are the good cop in the good cop/bad cop act. They're both cops, they're not your friends, they're not helping you, neither of them give a fuck about you. ACAB.
