"Based on these reports, users see a message stating “Comments are turned off,” which appears across a wide range of videos"

Seems like a win to me.

They will still inject ads to your home feed even if you get premium. I noticed the “Introducing” titled video recommendations which are usually 1-2 mins and they essentially place an item in your home feed. When I asked support they confirmed they were targeted ads but you don’t have to click them LMAO. Filthy lying company.

uBlock Origin on Firefox with default settings and filterlists still works successfully on Youtube.

[–] Stitch0815@feddit.org 56 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Raymond Hill is the absolut GOAT

"No way around it" always ends the same After 2 days uBlock just works.

Taking no donations, just maintaining out of pure spite

Love to see it

Updating Firefox suddenly fixed this for me. I then later just had my entire google account banned and I had to create a new account. They even attempted to IP ban me as well. Said I was banned until 2036 or something like that.

[–] JaddedFauceet@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

what is the reason for the ban?

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So you lost access to gmail as well?

[–] dorumon@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah and I had to change my gog and itch.io email addresses.

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Damn, and that's just the ones where swapping the email is possible without access to the original. More and more services seem to send a verification code at login. I guess you're just shit out of luck then.

I better stop watching youtube then.

You didn't get any options to unlock your account early, like pay a penalty or something?

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Your account got banned from YouTube, or you got banned from Google and it's apps?

[–] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Please reply to this dorumon

If it's a ban from the whole google echo-system that is fucked up. I sadly still have a lot of important stuff linked to my google account.

[–] dorumon@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah it was a ban from the Google eco system.

[–] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Damn, that's rough

[–] filcuk@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

+, I've been untangling from Google for years, still find the odd thing going to Gmail that could screw me over

[–] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I've started recently too. Slow and steady. But if this is true, I need to hurry tf up. It's sad we (in Sweden) practically HAVE to have a google account since we use an app called BankID for everything with banking and identifying ourself with the government. So no google account ≈ no id

You can get the BankID for your bc but only for windows and I don't have a windows pc anymore.

[–] sol6_vi@lemmy.makearmy.io 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mirror my yt channel that feeds my family to peertube for my viewers. No one watches it, but I'll keep trying.

[–] CoffeeTails@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Please share a link to your peertube channel :)

[–] sol6_vi@lemmy.makearmy.io 1 points 21 hours ago

Its watch.makearmy.io

[–] Zwrt@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Invidious if you can host it yourself.

Freetube if you cannot.

Yt-dlp if all else fails.

Same content, and besides needing an occasional update when google tries to break them again, no bullshit.

For people who only go off headlines and comments and don't read the article, here's the important bits:

  • This only affects some users, not everyone
  • The issue is that comment sections are disabled and video descriptions claim to be empty
  • The issue goes away with a refresh, you don't need to turn off the adblocker, though you'll have to refresh every video
  • It affects all videos
  • The link to adblockers is due to everyone who is reporting the issue being a user of an adblocker, and turning it off fixing the issue permanently until it's turned on again
  • There's no specific browser or adblocker mentioned in the article
  • It affects Premium users too

edit: added "the article" after "don't read" to clarify

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 155 points 3 days ago (29 children)

This is why I will never get premium. You pay the motherfuckers money and still have to take it up the ass.

"there's currently no way around it"

"The issue goes away with a refresh"

lol. sounds more like a bug if it's also affecting Premium users though

Ok Google, free us from our sins. Clense our souls, show us the way to green grass

[–] Puddinghelmet@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

download yt videos and lets reupload everything onto peertube idk

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Theres a reason that youtube has no real competitor.

because the amount of data that gets uploaded to youtube every day, every hour, is unfathomable.

I dont even know if its possible to create a proper competitor to youtube at this point. Just from a data center/harddrive point of view alone, the amount of money would be so staggering as to be impossible for anyone but another giant evil company to have a hope at being able to afford it.

There is no real way to compete with youtube directly.

Only options are things that are not direct youtube competitors, Which are typically much smaller, possibly maintaining a narrow subject focus, and require monthly fees/subscriptions to access

[–] cyanners@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I dont even know if its possible to create a proper competitor to youtube at this point.

There is. People just wouldn't like it. Lowering the resolution and framerates massively to save on space. The nerds (derogatory) would trash the platform everywhere they can have a voice if it doesn't support 4k 120fps, though.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Even if you limit it to 720p, if it were to be even a quarter as popular as youtube, the bandwith and storage requirements would still be astronomical.

not to even mention the computational power required to process and transcode all that data from whatever format you upload it to, into whatever format the platform wants.

I’ve stopped using YouTube for the most part. Cut down a lot once they broke the search function and I could no longer find what I was looking for because every result would be flooded with random shorts and other irrelevant content.

Then, my account, which was made in either 05 or 06, got flagged as belonging to a minor and they asked me to verify my age with an ID. Why this even happened when the account itself is over 18 now, and I’m not in the US (which I thought was the only place their age verification BS was being implemented) is beyond me.

I wish there were more options for long form video sharing, since YouTube seems to be the only viable platform for it at the moment.

fuck Youtube ads.

[–] jh29a@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm only going to click these Articles when my adblocker actually stops working, its basically clickbait until then.

Pretty sure this does not affect Firefox as my adblocker still does the job

[–] remon@ani.social 103 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (11 children)

So my adblocker now also removes youtube comments? That's more of a feature than a hurdle!

They did successfully disable uBlock Origin for me on chrome but I found a workaround that so far seems to be sticking fine despite further updates. Still see comments and descriptions fine on youtube. Occasionally things take a little longer to load than I would expect but I'll take a longer load time on a black screen over being stuck watching dogshit ads relentlessly.

uBlock also seems to just continue to work on FireFox which also plays youtube fine.

I find getting rid of YouTube to be incredibly difficult. I use both peer-tube and odysee as much as possible, but still find myself on YouTube more than I'd like. Of course, I'm only doing YouTube through a newpipe, but it's still accessing YouTube.

I don't really get the sentiment here - what's happening is the standard development if a public good (that youtube kind of was before google purchased them) gets privatized. It's the same with communications (isn't AT&T great?), water, electricity, rail infrastructure and trains, roads - investors are never good for the public good. They're only good at lining their pockets.
