The post mentions World ID as an example of a third-party service that used biometrics as a basis to prove humanness, and says “the internet needs verification solutions like this, where your account information, usage data, and identity never mix.”

Yup, knew it. This is all just an excuse to get Sam Altman to scan your eyeballs

What stops someone from validating an account, then posting using a bot?

[–] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I don't necessarily support this, but I feel like this at least adds a barrier to a single person setting up hundreds of bot accounts easily. Similar to locking your doors, it just adds friction to those that would otherwise not put a lot of effort in. People can still break into your house/run a bot farm, but this makes it just that much more difficult. Again, I don't really support doing this, and it's definitely not being done for user's benefit, but it will likely have some impact on botting.

They're too busy protecting nazis to be good at the rest of their "job."

The article basically says that posting using the API will get posts labeled as "[App]". That's what it boils down to. They even talk about human accounts using AI to write posts.

If you can connect to a site using a browser, so can a bot.

Yes, but what does that have to do with my comment? (edit: they explained the context below)

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I’m just saying that the proposed solution will be ineffective at filtering bots, but create a false sense of security.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Ah, gotcha, I hadn't caught that between the lines. :)

Yeah, I think it'll be pretty trivial to get around. Anyone wanting to post automatically just has to sign up manually, do whatever checking, then post using some sort of scraper i.e. directly to the site rather than via the API. Which probably a lot of bots are doing now rather than bothing to set up the API.... heh

I guess it's good that they're trying to do a positive thing (ignoring all the shit they're doing outside of it), but it's probably not going to help much.

It’ll be much more annoying to automate but can’t the ais just use computers now?

Much more expensive to manage bot farms though

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It’s trivial to automate browser clicks like that with AI these days.

But yeah, more expensive than an API call.

r/conservative is going to lose so much engagment

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You just got permabanned from r/conservative for that comment. /s

[–] GutterRat42@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I got permananned from r/conservative because I said "I disagree with Tr". I couldn't even finish my comment.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

They know how dumb their audience is so are proactive banning anyone counter manipulating them.

I've always been saying "Fuck Spez", but... not like this!

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What happens when they realize it's all bots?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They already know it's mostly bots. They just want to pimp out their human users more. They know they are suckers because they are still on there.

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

But if they label them the jig is up.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah they will just be labelling the non connected bot ops. Corporate influence operations, government connected ones, will not be labelled.

[–] winni@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

maybe we get it all wrong and reddit is for ai slop only, all human accounts will be banned.
Ok its already pure ai slop

Why are you posting ads for a website?? Shouldn't you just post the content here so you're not advertising???
