JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

I wonder if the IOC will be using the World Cup as a test bed. This certainly will not go well - there will be horrific stories coming from the few athletes and tourists that DO come for some reason, and attendance will be otherwise annihilated. What are the chances that the 2028 Summer Olympics in LA get moved? They'll have 2 full years to ramp up in another city elsewhere in the world, probably one that has had the Olympics in the recent past and has the infrastructure built out already.

A joke couched in truth

[–] Limonene@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At this rate, they'll deport the players. Is it too late to move the 2026 world cup?

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can 100% guarantee at least one athlete is going to be refused entry.

World cup includes tiny nations with players that are closer to your local plumber who plays on the weekends than to Christiano Ronaldo flying in on a private jet. Think Trinidad&Tobago and etc. Would definitely not be surprised when some of them get deported when stepping out of their regular flights.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I expect to see star players deported right before matches against the US team.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Ohh, I certainly wouldn't put anything past them.

At this rate, they're gonna be deporting the prime minister of Canada, the pope, and king of England, when they visit in 2026

[–] ours@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Or worse, meet face to face with JD Vance and die of cringe the next day.

And today in our "How to kill tourism in your country for one of the biggest worldwide events" class, we examine JD Vance and his idiotic comments about the world cup.

Lol 100% americans still don't do Riots... So 💯% americans still accept this and they act like "hello fuck you all on earth get die" FCK you Amerika

Edit: To the downvoters... Greetings from Germany... After generations you will still be labeled a Nazi ( Well americans will labeled not the same). Have fun in your future... Those who know the history and do nothing but think they are smarter than the MAGA supporters. Too bad your children will suffer the most for your mistakes.

Made in "any US state" already means = don't buy, Trash quality.

[–] SynonymousStoat@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I believe rioting right now would just give Trump more ammunition to push more extreme policies even faster and right now I think the left is trying to delay until midterms or until Trump does something so egregious that Congress can't deny impeachment any longer. I would really love to say that going out and rioting would fix the problem, but I think at the stage we're at right now it would only be met with a more militarized force against us and a lack of any center/center-right leaning people having any sympathy to the cause and we really need some of the more purple states to step up

But yes, please do boycott US made products as it seems the only way anyone is listening is by negatively effecting profits of corporations. But do know that there are states that are successfully fighting back against Trump and it seems that there is momentum in resistance building.

[–] IceFoxX@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

How? Trump wouldnt be a Problem anymore. Don't think about useless small Riots..

Atm i just see the the same peacefully falls like the germans against Nazis/Hitler. For Germany there was 2 world Powers needed in the end. So you wait for WW3. Not to forget... Trump basically blames the others for what he has done or will do. He has accused many of risking World War III and just look at America's global actions. But of course wait and see that your completely corrupted system won't do anything anyway. Don't learn from history, experience it for yourself.

Been to Canada and Mexico.
Flew over that shithole but that's as close I want to come to that awful country, no matter who's in charge.
I've heard plenty horrible stories from people I know who got treated badly by their gestapo cops and border goons.
