ok, I'm bringing my own durian next flight.

[–] RecursiveParadox@piefed.social 1 points 11 hours ago

If there are any fellow Dutch people here do not bring Gevulde speculaas. It looks like bombs to them. Ask me how I found out at Schiphol....

[–] sunrisepirate@piefed.social 71 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Spirit only been out of business for 24 hours and Delta rushing to fill the void of shitty service

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 20 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I’m suddenly reminded of when United Airlines was dragging customers down the middle of the aisle of the plane for some reason.

They break your guitar then beat you up

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago

like the vultures they are.

it's hilarious how flying gets exponentially worse every single year and everyone's all ohwellwaddayagonnadoamirite

i don't know how much money you'd have to pay me to ever deal with flying again, but it would be a lot.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 18 hours ago

its madtv paradoy of the airlines fufilling prophecy. in the that madtv skits, the airline was nickle and diming everything, including seatbelts, up to the oxygen.

[–] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 67 points 1 day ago (3 children)

THEN THEY WONT BE MAD WHEN I BRING MY OWN FOOD TO THE AIRPORT RIGHT...

RIGHT....

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (8 children)

.... Actually, they don't get mad. I have done that a few times, bringing sandwiches with me.

TSA only cares about liquids, you can bring all the non-liquid food on you want. If it fits in the scanner (and doesn't show up as liquid), it's all good. Your airline may care about bringing extra carry-ons, but they won't careif you eat it before getting on.

And I've been on a bunch of those short flights, they go up and are cruising for about 20 mins before they start coming down. I bet the cabin crew didn't always make it to the back of the plane anyway before they had to pack it up.

Of all the shitty things airlines do, it might be the least shitty.

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 hours ago

They don't even care about ice. So I bring ice through TSA and just fill up the bottle after I get through.

[–] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

TSA only cares about liquids, you can bring all the non-liquid food on you want.

True, BUT, I’ve seen them tell a guy that a salami was a liquid and confiscate it.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 10 hours ago

I've been on a few Delta flights, and I often bring snacks. I think I brought a muffin on and ate it on one. They don't care. I don't know why they would either.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 12 hours ago

Yep. TSA didn't care about the Teamsters sandwiches, just the Teamsters dipping sauce.

[–] loanrangerofpeanuts@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They don’t even care if you eat your own food during a flight. The flight attendants only concern is that the tray table is up during takeoff and landing. Aside from that, eat (almost) whatever you want.

[–] vrek@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In my experience you are right but I wonder how far you could take it... Like there are outlets at most seats in modern airplanes, could I bring a hot plate and make Korean BBQ on the flight?

DO NOT DO THIS! BEST CASE YOU WILL PROBABLY BE INCONVIENCED AND HARESSED, WORST CASE ARESSTED!

[–] criticon@lemmy.ca 13 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

I don't think airplane outlets output more than 100Watts

[–] vrek@programming.dev 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I have no idea, just a funny thought. What if you used your carry-on for like a 30lb turkey and started carving it up like Thanksgiving once you reach coasting altitude?

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, that's not going to fit under your seat.

[–] vrek@programming.dev 2 points 11 hours ago

Obviously not, that's what your carry on is for. Under the seat might work for sides or maybe some bisquits...

[–] bountygiver@lemmy.ml 1 points 17 hours ago

what if you mod somesort of abonimation that connects to 10 separate outlets to power the hotplate?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

You know I don't fly and did not think much about the liquid restriction but this kinda makes me think they should always provide water, coffee, tea, pop, and other cheap options.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 2 points 12 hours ago

Most airports have the water bottle fillers you can fill for free, but most everything else has airport pricing.

Also, some forms of chai look very similar to explosives with their new scanners.

[–] Kacarott@aussie.zone 5 points 19 hours ago

You should always be able to get water for free on a plane

[–] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your shit will get extra searched if any if the food is in containers they can't scan though. Not exactly convenient to have my bag fully emptied and scrutinized by TSA because I brought Goldfish crackers. Also flights near the Canadian border definitely have food restrictions even if you are flying between US destinations.

[–] OfCourseNot@fedia.io 3 points 23 hours ago

Not at all. I boarded lots of planes with food brought from outside the airport. Even international, back to Europe from the USA I went through the controls with some left over chicken no problem.

[–] plz1@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago

So, big block of ice?

[–] nathan@lemmy.permisuan.com 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

No they don't I've done it a lot

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Ryanair threatened to charge me for an "extra bag". The "extra bag" was a sandwich.

[–] nathan@lemmy.permisuan.com 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Sure but I doubt the sandwich was the issue, it was that it was a second item. If you had it in your bag there likely wouldn't have been an issue

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

It was a sandwich I'd bought at the airport. They'd put it in a wee baggy. I ate the sandwich before I boarded and threw away the bag. The person who tried to charge me was the check in dude.

[–] criticon@lemmy.ca 1 points 23 hours ago

You can bring anything you want as long as it's not more than 3oz liquids

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Sorry i really don't give a shit or share everyone’s angst.

Airplane snacks and drinks have always been shit.

[–] Teh@sh.itjust.works 3 points 21 hours ago

Amazingly I’ll sit on my couch, or at my desk for 3+ hours without anyone bringing me a drink or stale pretzels and I somehow survive. It’s a miracle every time.

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah after flying for business for 30 years, I don't eat or drink any of that crap anymore. I eat before I get on the plane or take my own snacks on with me.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 2 points 13 hours ago

Yeah, for 20ish years now all I do is bring some bottled water with me.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I totally agree. It should be like a time length thing, where like 3+ hour flights it's required and people that actually like it can fly on airlines that advertise it. They have water refill stations in most airports if you want to bring a bottle and you can purchase other beverages if you wish.

It's actually annoying to take off, then 20 mins later have them do a drink service that takes a half hour to complete, to then have them come back and bother me again less than an hour later to pick up cups.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 23 hours ago

I feel like 3+ hours you should get an actual meal. thats a long time especially if you take into account getting through security and to the airport.

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago

Free whisky was nice.
