Edit: some of y'all are upset about horse chiropractor. Called the dude up and he is an equine physiotherapist and people just call him "the chiropractor"

I was going to have a trainer ride her today, but she was too sore for it. I didn't even saddle her due to how sensitive her back is right now.

Are horse chiropractors actually a studied and licensed position, unlike human ones?

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 27 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Not to throw shade on OP, but no, chiropractors are quacks in the horse world too. It’s a huge grift from a couple veterinarians that work nearby me.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We have a word for that studied and licensed profession: veterinarian, possibly with equine specialisation.

[–] SomeoneSomewhere@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Physical therapists are not necessarily as qualified as doctors; they can do great work without needing the breadth of a full training. The same could apply to animal health.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

PTs, yes, which are qualified health providers. Chiros, however, are a snake oil

[–] SomeoneSomewhere@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

OP says horse chiros are basically PTs. I don't know whether to believe them or not, but the idea that you don't need to be a full vet to give a horse PT seems reasonable.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It kinda just sounds like its snake oil, but for horses

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Worse, is snake oil for horse owners.

Unless it’s more of a message and the horse feels better after some deep tissue work.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 day ago

Chiropractic is one step away from placing amythest crystals around the room and humming.

At best it's a shitty massage and if they sold the service as shitty massage (that might badly injure your spine) there wouldn't be a problem.

An equine massage therapist? Fine, it's honest. Equine chiropractic? Horse feathers.

[–] anna@retrofed.com 2 points 22 hours ago

I wonder if there's horse oil for snakes.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah. It's very different than people chiropractors. It is body work and stretching and massage to get things back into place. It's expensive, but it'll be worth it.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

That sound exactly the same, actually.

How are they regulated? Because if they aren't, then you don't really know what you're getting.

"Good" chiropractors will stick to the same treatments that actual medical professionals would prescribe, and hence produce results at times. But that doesn't change the fact that it's not a protected term that brings with it some kind of license or education.

As such, no-one who takes doing things right seriously goes by it. To people who science, the term sits right next to homeopathy, and will never be associated with serious medical care.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

This is more like physical therapy than chiropracty. There's no actual cracking or popping of joints. It's called chiropracty by most folks because it's simpler. I've never had a people chiropractor do proper body work and stretching on me ever.

The vets recommend this stuff for horses, too, so it isn't quack science. Each vet, at least the ones I know, have chiropractors they work with.

I was very hesitant about the whole practice until I saw it being done and saw how great it was for the critters

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Then they shouldn't call it that.

The word has a definition, and quack science explanation that defines the "field".

"Chiropractors" who provide proper care aren't exactly being honest, either. They don't call themselves that because it's simpler. They do it because it's illegal for them to claim to be medical professionals.

[–] imsufferableninja@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So more like a physical therapist?

Can he do my back after Sandy ?:x

[–] islandcoda42@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago

You are beautiful, Sandy. Hope the doc gets you fixed up soon. Much love💕❤️💕❤️💕

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 2 points 22 hours ago

Oh hey. It’s sandy! I love sandy. I hope she gets better <3

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Poor girl! I hope she’s feeling better really soon! Give her my love.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Aw damn ☹️

Have you checked her for any bug or tick bites, or perhaps evidence maybe a branch fell on her?

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't see any injuries or bugs bites or anything. This is a common thing with horses, especially older ones. There's a number of things that could cause it. The biggest contenders I can see causing this for her are: rolling, kicking at another horse, and running like a dingus.

[–] vrek@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Out of curiosity...how old is sandy?

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

She'll be 27 this year. She sure as heck don't act like it tho lol. People think she late teens to early twenties when they see her strutting around like she's hot shit lol

[–] vrek@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wow she does look good for that age. My father had a horse but he got rid of it before I was born(mostly because of my grandmother).

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She looked AWFUL a year ago. She was so underweight and weak that she was going to die if I didn't get her living conditions and diet changed immediately. Moved her to a new barn and got her on some good feed and increased her supplements and she's back to great health now. Took so much, sweat, tears, money, and a little blood to get her in good condition. My profile has her whole saga going back like 2 years

I'm sorry your dad had to get rid of his horse. It's never easy.

[–] vrek@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah I saw many of your posts, just didn't know sandy was that old.

Long story short, he had a champion breed and champion black stallion which he cared for from birth. He ended up going to Vietnam war, told my grandmother to "check up" on it occasionally but the stable would do all the day to day work for it. His plan was to come home and breed it for income.

One day my grandmother was there making sure it was OK and the horse kicked the bucket. No, that's not a euphanism it literally just kicked a bucket. My grandmother claimed it was aggressive and got it neutured. My father got back, loving reunion at airport, next day he goes to check on the horse and finds out what happened. The next time he talked to my grandmother, his mother was 1983 when my mother forced him to call and tell her she was going to be a grandmother as my mother was pregnant with my sister.

Another fun fact... He was literally an elephant trainer but then one day couldn't open his eyes to see. Overnight developed an allergy to hay and had to change entire job industry.

Wow! That's amazing. Thanking you again for sharing your and Sandy's odyssey with us!

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you! It's been such a journey but so worth it. One of the hardest but most gratifying things I've ever done. Now that she's in good shape, we gotta get her manners and training back to what they used to be years ago.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You are welcome! You're putting in so much dedicated effort, I think you'll get there, or a close-enough approximation of it. I do hope (and think that probably) Sandy will be okay soon. I also think you two are a great team and really good for each other. It's been such a blessing taking this vicarious journey with you both, and seeing the portrait @ballshapedman did made my heart swell with vicarious pride, joy, and genuine appreciation for all three of you!

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Aw thanks for the kind words! It means a lot to me! I'm so glad Sandy has made you happy!

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're so welcome; but not just Sandy, it's all the love, care, and energy you give her. It's amazingly tender and touching. Your posts ooze love and pride, and I'm here for it!

There are several of us here just for that! :)
