Severe damage off a 1 watt green laser isn't assured. It'll do something, but likely not fully incapacitate it. You see guys screwing with strong lasers cooking camera sensors all over Youtube.

Better off with spray paint or tape or just stealing the camera.

Just use a paintball marker. It doesn't destroy the camera, but you can paint the lens. They then have to have someone go there and clean it or wait until they get lucky with the rain cleaning it. It's probably also less of a crime than actually destroying the thing.

You would be a little more conspicuous marching around your neighborhood wielding a paintball gun than you would be with a pocket-sized laser pointer.

I assume it's mostly Americans affected by this so, genuine question. Why buy a laser when one of your regular guns will do a better job, with the same legal ramifications?

Guns are loud and draw attention. Also, in addition to Flock cameras, Flock also installs gunshot detectors all over the place that detect and triangulate gunshots.

OK, but, to shoot a handheld laser at a camera and hit the CCD, you have to be in it's field of view. You could shoot it with a gun outside of it's field of view. So, is it a greater risk to make a noise, and not be capture on CCTV, or be silent in full view of a law enforcement camera? All things to bear in mind when you're figuring out the best ways to destroy these things.

You'd be better off calling in a drone strike. Capable of hitting the target from beyond visual range (over the horizon) with a low risk of missing due to the explosive payload, and zero chance of being heard or seen by any camera in the area.

Sarcasm aside, a gun is loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage to those around you, and the bullet will over penetrate the camera, continue to fly, and possibly hit someone downrange of the camera. Especially since cameras like that are obviously located in high traffic areas with a large number of people passing through. So under ideal conditions where you hit your target, odds are good that you will also hit a person. And in the event that you miss? Well, you most likely just shot someone. Isaac Newton is the meanest son of a bitch in space for a reason and 9mm is the preferred pistol round for the police and military because its generally larger size and smaller powder charge compared to other rounds means that it has a lower velocity and is therefore less likely to pass through a target and the wall behind them and hit somebody in an adjacent room.

Is there some special reason green is used?

So it doesnt, but it puts you in the antifa black book.

[โ€“] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That book is on volume 80 right now. You can get into it just for expressing disapproval of ice in any setting, including this one.

Just put a bit of gaffa tape over the camera

[โ€“] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

those are easy to remove, better to make it cost more for them to replace it.

[โ€“] piecat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Whats the coat of labor though?

I bet the charge for covering a camera with tape is a lot less than destruction of property.

But if you do, hide your face first.

[โ€“] modus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I want to be sure I avoid these. Is this what I should try not to use?
