I'd definitely do this to screw with people.

If life is almost over, the cyan toner doesn't really seem all that important.
If it's one thing that deserves to die it's a printer. Unless it's brother, those are ride or die.
EDIT : I'm doubling down. I installed debian drivers from the official brother site for SCANNING and it worked perfectly. Fucking W company.
Personally I've found the Canon laser MFPs to also play nice with Linux, with both scanning and printing working just fine.
