  1. The mods are fallible; if you've been banned or had a post/comment removed, please appeal.
  2. Off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't know what "Leopards ate my Face" is, try reading this post.
  3. If the reason your post meets Rule 1 isn't in the source, you must add a source in the post body (not the comments) to explain this. If the reason is in the source but is tedious to find (e.g. in a lengthy video), you must add an explanation for where it is.
  4. Posts should use high-quality sources (for a rough idea, check out this list), and posts should retain the title (if one exists) from works like news articles, videos, etc. You may (but need not) edit your post if the source changes the title. “Three time trump voter”

Shoulda just stopped right there.

Three. Times.

History was always there, ready to be picked up and used as a mirror. Trump has always been who he was. Cruelty, nationalism, and prejudice haven’t changed definitions. There were no secrets.

These douchenozzles are all the same. They were perfectly happy to let trump F everything up as long as it was everyone else getting F’d. As soon as it inconveniences them, they suddenly find some kind of righteous morality.

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean to be fair he gave a good explanation i thought, slowly realizing over time that he was wrong. Yeah is he a dumbass for voting for him three times, of course. But apparently half our country is dumbasses and understanding how their minds work is key to surviving in this dumbass country.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 11 points 2 days ago (8 children)

"Do hateful bullshit to the people I don't like and I'll vote for you."

There, that's how their brains work. It's not some complicated mystery.

Yes. That's partially because many Americans are racist (or at least willing to throw someone else under the bus) and weak-minded, and partially because our education has been intentionally dismantled by the parasite class.

Now, are you more interested in lauding your own moral superiority over them (thereby making them feel unwelcome in spaces and communities able to enact actual positive change) or are you more interested in building working class consciousness?

You have to pick one.

If you're a marginalized / vulnerable person, by all means stay away from these people because yes, they are largely indoctrinated garbage and will probably make you feel unsafe. And you can disregard everything I'm saying in this comment because it's not my position to tell you how to respond to that danger.

But if you're a white liberal (not exactly a longshot guess here on Lemmy), then that is your responsibility. You aren't going to dismantle whiteness by finger-wagging and offering "I told you so" on the internet, you'll dismantle it by showing them another, better way.

It's either that or you round them up and kill them, and I don't think that would be a particularly beneficial approach (except for those convicted Nuremberg style). Otherwise, these people aren't going away and will continue to effect the trajectory of our country. You can try to help heal them, or you can deal with the consequences of them continuing to exist as a moral, spiritual, and emotional black hole.

Oh. Would have been nice to come to that conclusion ten fucking years ago!

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 16 points 2 days ago

They're only turning against Trump now because he is the worst thing a GQPedo can be- unelectable. They only care about power. Bush was 100% their guy until the 2008 election then he was persona non grata to the point he wasn't even invited to events. DO NOT believe this "I see the truth now" BS, because the next obvious Hitler that comes along they'll be voting for three times again.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

"but we don’t learn from history"

Nah bitch, YOU don't learn. Don't try to lump me in with your inability to feel compassion or hold a coherent thought.

[–] HarneyToker@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (5 children)

For every 1 person turning a new leaf, there are 99 ex-republicans that will be “done with politics” while constantly talking shit about liberals and never taking accountability for their own actions.

We live in a democracy. When you vote for someone that does horrible things, that’s like hiring someone to do horrible things for you. They are “just following orders” from you, the voter.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

Assuming it was a democracy rather than an oligarchy, sure. Your point is still valid though.

There were no boomers in the 1930s, life expectancy was 62. We now have demented voting for demented.

73 year old Hawaii resident Richard Sniffer regrets voting repeatedly for Trump now that his gas prices are way higher.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 52 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Get fucked, Johnny come lately. That's all been obvious since 2015. You weren't brainwashed, you're just a Nazi who got conned.

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We need to make sure they remember it. A mark of the beast if you will.

This is what genuine intelligence looks like. This man was able to look inward, admit he was misled and made a mistake and tries to correct it while learning something in the process.

Too bad half the country is dumber than this.

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 57 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, the three time Trump voter. Genuine intelligence. Give me a break.

[–] paranoid@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (7 children)

The intelligence here is the ability for this person to change their core beliefs after seeing, and accepting, facts.

It matters less how long it took for them to get here, and more that they are here now

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago (4 children)

No no no...

How long it took them to get here was really fucking important.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't think people are so much doubting his intelligence as doubting the sincerity of his about-face?

Is he against Trump because he's become enlightened, and wishes to renounce all the bigoted ideals Trump championed?

Or has Trump's deranged rampage personally hurt him more than he could tolerate? And now he wants a more placid ride?

It's hard to say. And I'm not very willing to let a fascist get away scot-free, even if a few reformed racists have to suffer the social consequences of their actions in the meanwhile. It's not charitable, sure. But fascism is a disease and you don't eradicate a disease by being charitable when quarantining.

If it takes a decade to see and accept facts it's no so much intelligence as an accidental brain neuron firing.

I'd say it matters quite a lot that it took them this long to get there. Quite a lot indeed.

These people should be banned from polite society and be glad that's all.

The caller, who identified as Thomas from Hawaii, told host Taylor Popielarzthat he now regrets his votes for Trump.

“It’s hard for me to say this,” Thomas said. “But I think if I can open up about it in public that it might help others. I wanted to believe Trump was the real deal for a long time — even though I had doubts because I knew enough about his business history to think otherwise. But now I regret my support for him, and I should’ve known better. He’s making it plain as day. He’s a con man, a liar, doesn’t keep his promises. He’s in office all for himself and he doesn’t even try to hide his corruption anymore.”

Thomas added, “He’s the worst president we’ve ever had and he’s the most corrupt president we’ve ever had. I know it’s hard, it took me a while to be able to say that. Very difficult when you commit yourself to believing in somebody.

Popielarz asked Thomas whether he’d voted for Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024 — and Thomas confirmed that he had. The host followed up by asking what was “the straw that broke the camel’s back” for Thomas.

“I don’t think it’s one thing, it’s been a cumulative process,” Thomas said. “And it’s gotten so blatant now…He was gonna lower prices on day one, he was gonna do this on day one, only he could fix all this stuff. And now I understand how somebody like Adolf Hitler was able to brainwash millions of people. I never I thought I’d see that again in my lifetime. But it’s happened, right? I thought we got past that, but we don’t learn from history.”

I'm actually impressed. It's incredibly difficult to leave an identity cult without professional help. The guy is genuinely an inspiration and I hope others that heard him will also be inspired.

Very difficult when you commit yourself to believing in somebody

It's really not.

Here's a tip, don't "commit yourself" to any fucking slimy politician (let alone this one)

[–] ecvanalog@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This guy is not for real. No Trump voter knows how to use the word “cumulative.”

Sounds like a mostly reasonable person.

Yes, the Democrats will win a majority somewhere in November. They're currently up 14% over Republicans nationally and that is rig-proof, blue wave territory. I don't see them making any major changes though, and they're probably salivating at the thought of the money they can make for themselves now that it's okay to insider trade AND insider-gamble on crypto and prediction markets.

A few will give some memorable, impassioned speeches before pulling the lever to insider trade, though.

Their strategy of lying down (and/or collaborating) and letting Donald jump off a cliff has worked, and sadly, to the detriment of all. I wish these bastards had actually opposed something.
