I saw a comment somewhere about how it's "ACAB" up until something like this happens and I was like "can you explain to me the process by which you think this person will be held accountable for the damage they have caused and the efforts that will have to be made to retrieve their personal property? Because that cost is going to be born by the tax payers and will have environmental implications.

They should have charged him for endangerment to his passengers too.

charged with [...] not having a valid boat registration

I LOL:ed

It has a maximum wading depth of 32 inches, for once this is on the driver.

Although I'm surprised musk didn't try to make the cybertruck amphibious.

Anything can serve as a boat briefly.

[–] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 10 points 1 day ago

We might argue that it's precisely the "briefly" part that separates the true boats from the not-boats-after-all

Even as a U-Boat.

Yes, you are looking at a social media post of the CEO of Tesla promoting the Cybertruck as being waterproof and being able to serve briefly as a boat, so that it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren't too choppy. So it's not too stupid for someone to believe that the "wade mode" in his Cybertruck is allowing him to cross a lake

There have been cars that can manage it.

https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/amphicar-president-johnson-1960s/

The Amphicar was manufactured in West Germany and first made an appearance in America at the 1961 New York Auto Show.

Originally designed by Hanns Trippel, these amphibious cars hit the US market from 1961 to 1967. Most notable for their ability to cruise on land and operate in the water, these cars were a fun new invention in the car world for that time.

One of the most famous owners of the Amphicar was President Lyndon Johnson. Those leisurely rides created the opportunity for a clever prank that Johnson enjoyed playing on his passengers.

It involved barrelling the vehicle down a hill into a lake and exclaiming to his passengers that the brakes had malfunctioned, while they had no idea the car was designed to float in water.

It is, in fact, too stupid to believe anything Me-lon says.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 14 points 1 day ago

Because the people that make them are cunts and the people that buy them are cunts.

[–] tirateimas@lemmy.pt 14 points 1 day ago

So fun... these fellows still believe Elon's words

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago

It isn't unusual for small trucks to float. That was one of the advantages of the small S10 sized 2wd with a 4 cyl. Light enough that it floated if you fell through the ice, thus giving you a chance to get to safety. When driving on 2-3 inches of ice this was important. (I personally refuse to walk on less than 4 inches of ice, and need 12 to drive on)

This scene was looking sooo much better in "The Spy Who Loved Me"

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 9 points 1 day ago

I think you figured out what's going on in these people's brains: they think they bought a legit spy car.

Police arrested Jimmy Jack McDaniel, 70, after he and two visitors from Germany to whom he was giving a ride became marooned near the Katie's Woods Park Boat Ramp around eight o'clock at night.

Making sure that they get the full tourism experience, I see.

People who intentionally choose drive their vehicles in water make me laugh.

There are many required reasons to drive a vehicle into a body of water, and you only do it when it is required.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah. If I had one of those ugly pieces of crap, I'd drive it into a lake too.

[–] nyan@lemmy.cafe 5 points 1 day ago

Pretty sure you can be charged with something if you do it on purpose and just leave it there. Littering, maybe.
