What would be a font matching the lettering on the T-shirt in this image?

Also, so that I can search fonts better in future, what key words could be used to describe it? I know it's serif, but anything else?

screencap of Tom in "I shot JR" t-shirt from the TV show Father Ted

EDIT: Thanks, everyone! Looks like it's Cooper Black.

Key words for this type of font seem to be:

  • serif
  • rounded serifs
  • blurred serifs
  • ultra-bold
  • display
  • old-style
  • heavy
  • black face (yes, I know)
  • long ascenders
  • small counters

It's the felt, iron-on letterform of Cooper Black (for copyright reasons, sometimes called Black Cooper).

Been around since the last century.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

Trademark reasons, surely?

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Thanks, that's it!

Father Ted is absolutely hysterical!

Can’t help you with the font but can highly recommend everyone watch this show.

Enjoy 😊

Couldn't agree more!

Looks like the 'I Shot JR' font is Cooper Black.

Got me wondering about the lettering of the show's title, but I can't find any info on that.

title for TV show Father Ted

Congrats on finding the font!

That one looks like a custom title for the show. Not sure how much luck you’ll have finding that one.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

I also assumed as much, just wondering if someone ever made a font based on it.

It's cooper black, for sure.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Thanks!

That looks like it. :)

I know you got the answer, but you can use this fontfinder site, works pretty damn well.

http://www.identifont.com/

I used to have to recreate logos before they were readily available online and this helped a lot.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks!

I saw it uses a flowchart approach (e.g. serifs or no serifs), which seems like a good alternative to the OCR approach but also had me thinking I might have to go through a lot of questions (some which I might not know how to answer) before getting a result.

But as soon as I did step 1 (serifs), the "Popular Matches" sidebar showed Cooper Black second from top! :)

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lmao Yeah, it narrows it down very fast, the question order helps greatly.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just to check, I kept going and it was 50 questions (!) before one applied to the characters I SHOT J R.

With that few letters, a lot of "not sure" answers?

I mean, it's a tool. Nothing is perfect.

What The Font is another one to look up. Sometimes they'll give different results so worth trying both.

[–] klu9@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I hadn't. Thanks, giving it a go now.

First time using it, not sure if I did everything right. Unfortunately, 59 results have sharp serifs, unlike the fat rounded serifs of the source. The very last one (Charlemagne Condensed) has rounded serifs, but seeing it enlarged, there are odd angles on the rest of the letter shapes.

Charlemagne Condensed font

So, something like that but without the additional odd angles.

EDIT: Looks like it's Cooper Black.

What the fuck is this from?

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Father Ted. First episode. One of the best comedy shows there ever was. Defo check it out as soon as you can. Dermot Morgan and Ardal O'Hanlon are absolutely killing it. ^^

Small.

Far away.

One of the earliest appearances of Graham Norton, too.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Alt text says Father Ted. That's an old BBC show. I didn't know Dallas was big over there - TIL.

Oops, sorry. I only encountered it on PBS & BBC America.

The 'body' (not sure of the right term) of Clarendon Bold looks quite similar but the serifs have right angles, unlike the rounded ones on the T-shirt.
