I have a coworker travelling there in July. Unwillingly, I've been more or less been kept in the loop what preparing the trip implies and I'm pretty horrified.

Up until now, these are some of demands made (and accepted):

  • full disclosure and acess to social networks
  • criminal record
  • recent photo, perfectly groomed and in the attire to be used to travel there. No deviations will be tolerated from the supplied photo.
  • complete list of possible identifying marks on the body, with pictures (tattoos, moles, melanistic spots, scars, etc)
  • name and social networks of parents, siblings and other close relatives, including children.

The person is separated with two children; this is causing a lot of friction.

  • has already been warned an interview of up to two hours will be held upon arrival.

The person speaks broken english at best.

  • disclosure of place of employment and other connections to public organizations

They are connected to a local soccer club and a youth sports association.

To add to all of this, this isn't a standard caucasian human but someone who has looks that can be taken for someone from the middle east, slightly darker shade of skin included.

Flying from southern europe straight to Florida.

I'm concerned. I would not go, full stop. They have people waiting there for them but nonetheless. Considering the heated state of affairs, it is something I consider of not easily to overlook risk.

I landed home from US yesterday. It was my first time travelling there, had no issues and it was safe as long as you are taking basic precautions in some areas. I stayed in good areas, people were very nice and friendly too. It is quite unlike the constant bombardment of negative news I read before going there, that got me worried as well, however being from first world English speaking country passport and ethnic immigrant appearance I did not have to provide social network of parents and siblings and process was easier. It is stricter for some countries than others at the immigration but that is at my home as well.

I definitely won't be going to America as long as they don't get rid of this censorship. Although I avoid having petty internet fights, some of my social media comments on Instagram are snarky anti-fascist and anti-corporate.

Once you actually get in it depends entirely on where they are and what they're doing. Having people there already would be much better than trying to navigate anything themselves. That keeps them within a bubble where they know people that know people, can keep them out of anywhere bad, and help with communication. Tourist sites will be generally accommodating if they go to them. Florida has tons of tourists all the time thanks to Disneyworld, so it's not like he's the first person ever to travel there.

Generally speaking, people are nice and willing to help, unless you're driving a car or in a Wal-Mart in a deep-red state.

Okay... That took me more than a couple of seconds to process and understand. The first image coming to mind was of a bulldog wielding a shotgun taking pot shots at people. But you're referring to the random Florida Man shooting people up just because. Right?

The connection to public organizations is really a political thing.

Unless the soccer club is known for radical political activity or violence, then they should be fine.

If coworker is politically active, member of communist / leftist party, or extremely outspoken online then they should take additional precautions.

They should also avoid any recreational drugs other than alcohol before coming, and review any medication carefully, as laws in Florida are strict.

As others have said, racial profiling is always possible, but extremely unlikely.

Political ties may be of some concern, although the person is not directly active.

So a lot of the potential risk depends on the details. What language do they speak, what country are they traveling from, what particular political affiliations and activities they are part of, etc.

I'm not an expert, but feel free to DM me if you don't want to share more info widely (although remember that direct messaging on lemmy is not secure or private).

They are primarily looking to catch troublemakers and drug traffickers. However, what may be considered a troublemaker is broad and unfair.

I'm writing from Portugal. Not really a country on the radar for political upheaval.
