One is my name. The other is not.

Just to be clear, it's Commander Data, not Commander Data.

Data is just a non-starter. Data makes you later!

[–] AyuTsukasa@lemmy.zip 1 points 41 minutes ago

Then there's me who says it both ways depending on the sentence.

I was looking for a NES game on GoG.

There is a right way to say that sentence. And a wrong way.

Which one do you hate more?

  • I was looking for a en ee ess game on gog.

  • I was looking for a ness game on gee oh gee.

There are at least 2 more ways to say it, along with some even more cursed variants.

Say gog like the G in gif?

[–] Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au 2 points 50 minutes ago

long E for nes, like neice.

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Could be gog, jog, goj, or joj.

You understand

Either way is fine but just don't come at me with "the data are conclusive"

[–] violentfart@lemmy.world 3 points 41 minutes ago

You can tell someone is older or in academics/research when they say it like this.

For most people “data” is a singular set. It’s clearer to say “these sets of data are conclusive”, while if it’s a single study, “this data is conclusive”

Like why you don’t walk into a police station and say “there were murders everywhere” when you’re talking about crows.

everyone toe-may-toe, toe-maw-toe, to indicate both are fine. As soon as I say taw-muh-toe however, there is an issue.

Might I suggest a compromise wherein everyone is equally wrong:

dah-tah

[–] PrimeErective@startrek.website 1 points 53 minutes ago

God forbid vowels have a consistent pronunciation throughout a word

Data in portuguese is normally spoken as Data, and means calendar date, while Data means the lay down command
